I play my x264 rips in my PS3. Before, it was collecting dust. But now, I use PS3 to watch HD movies using media server. =)

I agree, PS3 + "PS3 Media Server" + Dual-Core computer or higher + Gigabit router would do the trick.

A cheaper option is to use the WDTV Media Player: WD TV Product Update

It has issues with playing some higher quality encodes but it's definitely cheaper! :p

If you're willing to wait till November, Boxee will be releasing hardware through D-Link that will stream any and all video files from your computers, as well as access tons of net content like hulu, netflix, and so on. It is planned to be under $200 USD, with HDMI, optical, wireless N, and all sorts of goodies. Check out Boxee - Movies, TV Shows and Video from the Internet on your TV.

HTPC, ASRock ION 330 HT Dual Core running XBMC on whatever OS you like.

Nice hardware assisted video decoding, plus it acts like a server in the background for everything else I have running.

I'm going to investigate the Boxee hardware, see if thats a simple solution for some others in the family.

Hi, the cheapest way is the WD TV Live player (the latest model). It's only 80-90€ and has HDMI which supports 1080p.

You just have to transfer your movies into an external hard drive USB then plug it into the WD TV and it reads everything perfectly. I use it to watch lots of anime/blu ray/tv series and had no problem with all the latest codecs.

I suggest you don't take anything wireless as HD movies are heavy and when you try to watch one via wifi on your computer it'll lag.

I'm using WDTV (first gen). So far so good but I'm watching mostly 720p.
I know it has limitation playing x264 w/ profile lv5.x. Not sure if that's addressed in the 2nd generation (WD TV Live).

That WDTV looks good - might be time to upgrade from my cheap media player me thinks
