Default Recommendations for Media Player (connected to beamer)

    hi everyone,

I currently have a linux server that stores all my media (connected to a 54g router via ethernet cable).
I would like to somehow access all the files directly from my projector/beamer.
currently I am always connecting the laptop the beamer - but we all know that is not the perfect setup ;-)

can anyone recommend networked media player. they dont need an internal HDD. I want to stream everything from the server. But the box should play flawlessly most files format (also hd 1080p)...

    cheers

Did you try vlc? it should be able to handle video streams over network. To play 1080p some "horsepower" is needed..

Well the Western Digital TV Live has network capability as does the Asus O!Play, if I am understanding what you want do do properly these two devices could possibly help you. Each of them cost about 90-100 dollars depending on where you look. Hope this helps

I personally have had no experience with them but the Western Digital ones get pretty good reviews from tech blogs on the net. The Asus O!Play gets good reviews also and I saw that this deal
Asus O!Play HDP-R1 Full HD 1080P TV Digital Network Media Player $69.99 AR shipped - SlickDeals.net Forums
If you live in the US, it would be 65 dollars for the device which is a great deal on it. What I would do is just go to amazon and read some of the reviews for those players and ones like them, I can name few like the Roku Player, brite-View cinematube, and the popcorn hour player. Those are the only 5 I know of of the top of my head.

@Sherlock thanks for the info...i guess will just order the WD Device and see how it works. I live in Europe which means that if I order online I can return the item with no problem within 2 weeks

    cheers

I use the WD device in the way you describe. Some formats can be tricky (.mkv, odd perspectives are not supported) but generally excellent capabilty- good reviewing speeds, will restart files from where you left off. The remote is good, if a bit small.
