Default streaming movies/shows from pc to tv?

does anyone do this? was curious how easy it is. My computer is quite a ways away from my tv. heard there are boxes you can hook up to your tv and and wireless access to computer, but how intuitive is it? does the tv look like my computer when its all set up? are there folders for music, movies, etc. etc. thanks guys for the help!

If you have an old xbox laying around I would highly suggest xbmc. The only drawback is that it is limited on playing HD.

Just got into this myself, works great and here's my setup .... I have MS Home server with some xvid movies (I rip copies of the movie to xvid and store the original as i do not have space to have all these cases around) then i run Tversity on the server and connect to it with my xbox 360 and stream the movies right from the server .... works great, i have 15 movies on there now occuping 11 gig, tiny !!
and the great thing is there you have the movie right at your finger tips, no more searching dvd cases for your movie. if you don't have an xbox 360 you can use a computer with tv out card located need the tv, friend of mine does it that way.

I see them in both formats, but is more comfortable on the computer play it immediately, the best way to dvd movies to share with my family.

Popcorn Hour is a great way to stream movies....accepts basically everything. No encoding/transcoding necessary.

If you have a newer TV with a connection to the internet / your home network vista and 7 will stream to it using dlna without any additional software. It does require file types that are natively supported by WMP though. If you have an xbox or xbox 360 u can stream the files to that also. In addition there are external boxes you can buy that will either connect to an external harddrive or stream through your home network.. Without knowing more about your equiptment I cannot help any more than that.

Do you have any gaming systems and also does your tv support hdmi / component / internet? If you have a wii you could look into PlayOn Media Server... it has a beta supporting streaming to the wii but I dont know much about it other than that.
