Default End of the World Movies

Is it just me, or do end of the world movies, destruction of the world, or city, actually do really good in the box offices? I just watched 2012, and it was an amazing movie in my opinion. I also noticed that older movies like doomsday, apocalypse, day after tomorrow, deep impact, I am legend, and etc. also had good box office hits. In my opinion, I like to watch this stuff, but sometimes I dont bcuz I really dont want this to happen in the near future. Tell me what u think?

P.S. I also watch The Forth Kind. Is it only me, but during the last hypnosis of the dr, and when the alien started talkin through her via sumerian language. Did your heart and or body feel like it shivered when she said " I AM GOD " I watched it once, and know it was a documentary and wasn't faked. I really hate that feeling, and that just got me thinking. WHAT IF?

Destruction movies are very expensive to make (due to the CGI that needs to be done), so not many are made. However, people like to see movies with lots of action and destruction, so whenever an apocalypse movie is released it is usually a hit. I think it's a demand-supply relation, not many are made but people want those kinds of movies.

I heard that the 2012 movie was terrible. Basically the movie companies make these types of movies because they make lots of money and look really good in the previews. But when you actually watch the movie, many times people are left disappointed because a lack of story or plot.

I have seen some really good low budget films that would sort of fit into this category. Such as "Moon" and "Sunshine". Two very excellent films with great story lines with CGI all done on a low budget.

I have yet to see Moon (looks good), but 2012 is amazing. Just a little suspension of disbelief, but it was an amazing flick

2012 doesn't really have a very good story imo, but the visuals and CGI are excellent.

Do zombie movies count as well? After all, humanity is doomed in those movies, right? If so, than I would have to go with the Dawn of the Dead remake of 2004. It's probably the best zombie movie I've seen so far, with some awesome action scenes. As for true end of the world movies, like 2012, I've only seen The Day After Tomorrow. Didn't like it too much, the CGI was alright but I just couldn't get into it.
