Heres a idea get yourself a hdmi graffics card for your computer. Then directly line into your tv with a hdmi cable from your computer and your all set you do not need the hd dvd player at all. This set up works well you can then use your TV as a montior also and you can always buy a large external drive to store your movies on.

720p sometimes is verygood, and has the advantage of being smaller files than 1080p.

but yes 720p or in some great movies that you think that justifies , then 1080 is the way to go.

you can always try making AVCHD to avoid loosing the quality on the conversion to a dvd, sometimes you have to record it a DL dvd.
