Upscaling a small sized movie file to 1080p will not make it look better.
It will on the contrary make it look worse...
i.e. if you're gonna convert a mkv to play in a standalone dvd player it will lose alot of quality during the process since mkv is a compressed container to begin with.
I'd recommend viewing them in their original resolution since you will get heck alot of less "noise" on your flatscreen.
