I'll second Babylon 5 as it actually has a cohesive story and a beginning, middle, and end. The SFX look a little dated, and some of the episodes are shite, but the series holds up ok for something 15 years old.

Torchwood, (Dr Who spin off), and Primevil or some classic like
Blakes 7, or Space 1999, (just for the cheese).

If you like Battle Star Galactica you should know there is a pilot for the spin-off prequel "Caprica" out, it's not a space opera like BSG it looks like it's going to be about the origins of the Adama family and the Cylons. It wasn't amazing but it was something to watch. :)

Also a new Stargate series called Stargate Universe starts soon, after the abomonation that was SGA I'm not expecting much from this series but hopefully it will suprise me.

Also I can't believe no one has mentioned Terminator The Sarah Connor Chronicles yet, I am by no meens a Terminator fan and yet I really enjoyed the 1st season of this series. The 2nd season is still good but they threw in a bunch of boring filler episodes.

I'm eagerly awaiting Stargate Universe but having some trouble hyping too much since I was also somewhat disappointed with Atlantis.

omg dude. you need to check out star trek. such good sci-fi if you're into anything-is-possible theoretical science and tech.. and then there are the characters... :)
i agree with mecht, but i wouldn't skip the first 3 seasons of voyager even though they are a bit slow.
    other good suggestions are:
    firefly
    the lost room
    babylon 5

but at least attempt a season or two of star trek. i'm just finishing up voyager and i love it
