Default Your take on Microsoft and Nokia deal...

So what do you guys think of the new deal that was announced on February 11th during Nokia's Capital Markets day about their deal with Microsoft to provide Nokia-made Windows Phone 7 devices?

For more information hit up Google yo!

On one hand, you have Nokia finally coming to their senses and realizing that Symbian is a dead OS and that they really needed to step up their game. However, choosing Windows Phone 7 (no I am not hating on the OS) is a bit, just a tiny bit, counter-intuitive. For Nokia to catch up to current Smartphone makers, they would really have to come out with a product that has the same, if not better, WOW factor akin to the iPhone and Android...

It also makes me feel that Nokia was a bit daft from the very beginning to not have realized that they couldn't take Symbian anywhere when devices running Android were under the same philosophy as Symbian was but did everything ten times better. IMHO, Symbian was like an 80-year old man trying to feel young again by pretending to do what 20-year olds were doing. At the end of the day, even if he looked good, he wouldn't be able to perform as well.

Now yes, I may be a bit biased towards Android rather than WinMo7 but I am talking in the context of Nokia trying to gain a leg in this race. If they wanted something better, they should have tried to go open-source. People, especially devs and tech-gurus, would go nuts!

    Anyways, whats your take?

I agree they should never have touched wp7. They should have spent some more time getting meego or maemo up to par with android and then they would be contenders again.

Yea, but according to them, MeeGo would have taken them a long time to set up to be a contender against all the other smartphone OSs... And Android was apparently not an option. I guess that they were left with "no" choice.

I think Nokia made the right decision, They had to make a call before they lost more market share. I am personally looking forward to a windows phone 7 nokia smartphone.

daredevil99, True that the decision they made was better than riding on Symbian and probably Microsoft is happy to have Nokia on their side as this will boost their chances of success for WinMo7. I just hope that Nokia will be able to take advantage of their ability and chance of customizing WinMo7 as otherwise would not set them apart from makers such as Samsung, HTC and others.

i think they will prob do what htc and a few others are doing, and put some out as win7 and others with another OS.

So basically while they develop meego and work out the bugs (there are a fair few ive used it on my N900 and they def have the wow factor but wouldnt be as user friendly yet)

i think it was more they had to make a choice and had to make it quickly and decided on win7 since its not on every phone yet but most windows users would find it easy to swap over (like using linux and maemo)

Agreed with armanatz, they definately have to customize it to stand out. They will obviously integrate Ngage and Ovi into it, hopefully alot of other stuff as well. Again, props to Nokia for admitting their weakness and taking such a big decision before it was too late. I just feel bad for their employees who were working on symbian. Its unlikely that they will keep so many employees to work on customizing winmo7. Quite a few of them might be sacked.

you would prob find alot of the symbian workers will still have a job since they are part of the dev team of meego aswell, and will prob have them port most of the apps/internals into the new OS's (hopefully anyway)

lol if not i guess massive layoffs and alot of pissed off developers looking for work on a OS which wont be used again (and one which hasnt been completed yet, hmm wonder if google/apple would like to buy some secrets :P)

I think they made the right choice, because if they went with android in order for them dominate the android market they have to make a fully beautiful theme on top of the android OS (like what HTC does) but i think the are more of a hardware company rather that an software, and since WP7 UI is consistant across all platform the selling point other that being a WP7 is how good the hardware is that the OEM produce.

I liked collaboration of Google & Samsung as I like both very much, but...Nokia & Microsoft...I am not so sure.
