I was going to install Android on my 3g, but unfortunatly I used jailbreakme on 3.1.2 and didnt save my shsh before apple stopped signing them, so I cant restore and use a bootlace compatible jailbreak. iOS 4 is just too slow on a 3g to bother with it. I'll just stick with jailbroken IP4.
I've used "Iphodroid" to install Android 2.1 on my old 2G and 3G iPhone. The process is really simple using this tool, it installs the boot manager for you. The process really was simple as following directions.
After it was installed, the system could dual boot to IOS or Android. My old 3G phone worked better than the 2G, but neither one worked very well. The power management wasn't working correctly so the phone ran all the time while booted to Android. I was able to make phone calls with it, but a lot of the features just didnt work correctly. The iPhone was never designed to run Android so the controls and interface were a little clunky.
Removing it was just as easy. Simply restore the phone in iTunes and the Boot partition and Android OS are gone. It's a fun project for a day =)

Android seems like a cool alternative, but I'd wanna check it out before completely switching
