Default Android OS overtakes iPhone OS

The NPD Group on Monday announced that Google’s Android operating system has overtaken Apple’s iPhone in total US smartphone market share.
Sourcing the latest sales figures from the first quarter of 2010, Android OS powered phones are now in second place (28%) behind RIM’s Blackberry OS which holds a strong 36% share. Apple’s iPhone OS stands in third place with a 21% market share.

As in the past, carrier distribution and promotion have played a crucial role in determining smartphone market share,” said Ross Rubin, executive director of industry analysis for NPD. “In order to compete with the iPhone, Verizon has expanded its buy-one-get-one offer beyond RIM devices to now include all of their

The market research company found that strong sales of the Motorola Droid, HTC Droid Eris, and Blackberry Curve helped Verizon to keep up with AT&T’s own strong smartphone sales. AT&T held the title of the number one smartphone carrier with almost a third of the market at 32%, while Verizon followed closely at 30%, and T-Mobile and Sprint lagged behind at 17 and 15 percent respectively.

I'm an Android user, but I bet this will get interesting when the new iPhone is released.

My contract is up in October, so I can finally get rid of my 433mhz POS G1. Thing has fallen off of buildings and still worked, I just wish it could run multiple apps.

But when I get off contract, I'm still going to be sticking with Android OS.

Not sure if SetCPU is an option for you for overclocking, but apparently the Cyanogenmod team is working on a G1/Magic port...

As I belong to the group of people who always thought that most of what apple does is more hype then product (the only truly innovative thing they did imo is the Ipod everything else was simply a rip off that they managed to hype like mad) I'm glad that they got overtaken, means more apps and possibilities for droid phones of which i'm probably going to get one the moment my current deal runs out.

Good to hear. Apple products in general, I'm getting sick of reading. Seems all the tech blogs have their heads to far up Apples rear these days.

while it is true, and it is sickening to read all the technology blogs tooting Apple's horn, objectively it is necessary to note that the iPhone is the most user friendly phone. and apple non "mac" products (meaning everything except their computers) are generally revolutionary products - think about what the ipod did the mp3 market and the iphone did to the smartphone market?! they single handedly redefined the user experience....

Only the best kind of takeover ;-)

This is great news. I'm tired of hearing about the iPhone as "the jesus phone" around here. Everyone seems to think it's the only phone that can do anything more than make a phone call. I really love when people look at me like "wtf your phone has a keybaord?" with my Samsung Moment. Sure, it's a little thicker than the iPhone, but really it's no thicker than any Samsung I've ever owned (SCH-U740 and 821SC). The Google sync really floors people.

Now if Sprint would just hurry up and release a stable 2.1 ROM so I can root that, instead of using this slightly unstable leaked SDX version.
