    Default Swype

So I'm on the look-out for a smartphone. I've been a fan of Android for some time now and so far one of the main things holding me back has been the lack of a device that meets all my specifications AND has a decent keyboard. Touchscreen-keyboards haven't been able to convince me so far.

Now I've discovered Swype (an alternative touch-screen keyboard) and it looks pretty fcking cool: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6spuyh3QPj8]YouTube - Interview with Swype for Android and Windows Mobile[/ame]

    Just wanted to share ;)

Also, if anybody knows of a good Android (2.x) Smartphone, I'd appreciate some recommendations, the keyboard is no longer a requirement ^^

Coming soon are the Samsung Galaxy S, HTC Evo and Google's own Nexus One... All are looking pretty sweet and I'm really psyched to get a proper phone this year :)

You can't go wrong with the Nexus or the Droid. Both are simply amazing Android devices.

Also the Swype keyboard is AWESOME! My sister recently bought a myTouch with Swype and I instantly got hooked on it!

I personally own a Motorola Cliq and I've been satisfied with it. Currently I'm waiting for the 2.1 update due sometime in April, May, or June.

Thx for the feedback :) What do you mean with "the Droid"? O.o

The myTouch looks decent enough, but I'm really looking for something with a higher resolution (pref. 480p) aswell as Android 2.x

@ Exa, Droid is a phone from Moto and it seems N1 is one of the few phones that you may want to check out.

regarding swype, it is simply amazing. The learning curve was round 3 days for me, just to get use to it.

the droid is actually called the milestone(check wiki), it's a phone by motorola (gorgeous with a full keyboard) . if i had to make a recommendation it would either be the nexus, driod or wait for the EVO 4 (google it)

and personally i love swype i installed it on my dream(g1) thanks to a little hacking but its amazing, especially for long words. The only issue is swears/obscure names must be added manually to the dictionary (not hard: type the word then hit space, type the word then hit space, and its in) its my permanent soft keyboard now.

ps.check how much a dream(g1) costs in your area i got mine almost a year ago and it suits me perfectly fine (all my smartphone apps i need and a few games) of course an upgrade would always be welcome.

pps. just noticed you want android 2.0 you shouldn't be so stuck on that most phones work best with custom roms anyways, and once you have one of those they are nearly inextinguishable from a 2.0

I purchased a HTC Desire. It meets my requirements, a great 480 display and Android 2.1

Didn't realize Swype was a closed beta product though :( Had to download it from some random source and hope for the best.

Been using it alot, you can tell it's a beta product because there's a few serious kinks in it, however it's truly fulfilling swyping a long word successfully :)

Sure you gotta add stuff manually, but that's hardly a problem. What's annoying, is that I have it set to German and lotsa useful english words aren't in the dictionary. Not even Android! :P They need to work on the ditionaries.

Love this phone, already got some great apps for it (the list is endless!! O.O)

GPS + HDSPA is fcking sweet, Google Maps ftw, I'll never get lost again ^^

The Barcode Scanner that checks the online price of practically any product is also very cool.

I feel like I've only just scratched the surface of what this device is capable of! And Swype IS the next standard for Touchscreen Keyboard Interface, great product and a definite alternative to smartphones with a "real" keyboard.

HTC desire seems to be a good choice, its actually the twin brother of Nexus One, they have almost identical hardware and it runs android 2.1 + HTC sense UI

Yea, and HTC is totally customizeable if you unlock it... so don't worry if you choose a phone with 2.x.. because you always can get the newest cuting edge technolgy from microsoft - if you've unlocked your HTC.

About Swype, I can't use it :/ by reason of that I text in Swedish, and it's to "clumsy" to get the "åäö" :P

The Incredible was released on the 29th. What made you choose the Desire?

I've been back and forth a few times with Swype. While I like the whole concept I still end up back at the HTC IME... which of course you already have. I really like HTC's stock touch keyboards versus the stock Droid. Spacing just seems better.
