Just skimming through the threads in this forum and find there's not much talk about Android based phones in here. Nobody else is excited about the upcoming Droid release? It may not be the most aesthetically pleasing phone to most people, but it's exactly my style: no nonsense, straight lines, function over form. I think the combination of the hardware and Android 2.0 makes this phone a geeks wet dream. Is this an iPhone crowd or are there other Android fans out there?

    EDIT:

Just for people who don't know about the Droid yet, thought I'd post a little info (Courtesy of BGR):

    • It’s running Android 2.0. Duh.
    • It’s thin. Just slightly thicker than an iPhone 3GS and the thinnest QWERTY-slider we’ve ever seen.
    • It is the fastest Android device we’ve ever used. (It’s running a TI OMAP3430 processor) [600 MHz ARM Cortex A8 Processor]
    • The feel of the device is very reminiscent of the OQO 02 model computer. Just smaller. It’s metal with a non-spring-assisted slide, very sturdy, and half soft-touch plastic.
    • Awesome capacitive display. Plus it’s huge. Easily the best screen we’ve ever seen on an Android handset, and an amazing screen overall. [3.7″ screen at 854×480 (16:9 widescreen)]
    • The QWERTY keyboard is actually pretty usable and has a soft-touch rubberized finish. We’ve been told the keyboard design isn’t final on this unit, thus the two no-shows.
    • Have we mentioned this phone flies? It’s the Android device to beat, and easily the most impressive. From what we’ve been told, Google had a direct hand in the Motorola Droid. Something to the point of almost dictating every move Motorola made when designing and making the phone. Interesting, huh?
    • There’s a desktop cradle/charger that will ship with the Motorola Droid that we’ve been playing around with. It turns your Droid into a “multimedia station” and displays local weather, the time, etc.
    • No one wants to listen, but it makes the CLIQ looks like a child’s toy (partly because it is, and partly because the Droid, even in its non-final form, is the most impressive phone we’ve used since the iPhone. It’s positively amazing).
Ok, enough of that — enjoy the photos! We’ll put together a nice little review soon.

Also to note, it has a 5 MP autofocus camera with flash, 16 GB on board storage (expandable via microSD), true multi-tasking, etc. The model BGR has is a pre-release and the design is subject to change (hopefully they just ditch the crappy gold accents and leave the rest as-is).

God dang! verizon is getting the Hero. That is kind of cruel! Damn t-mobile.

Anyways there's a plenty of people who love android here, ethicks for one. lol.

I've had two Androids so far, mytouch, and g1. Although right now I'm sticking to my Blackberry curve.

According to the rumor mill, T-Mo is the only carrier not getting a version of the Hero (even AT&T is rumored to be working on their own version). Hopefully for Hero fans stuck on VZW that the device that has been spied in pics and said to be their Hero was just a test shell, because that thing was ugly. lol

I would be pissed if I was T-Mo. Being the only carrier that gave Android a chance for a year, then when the more advanced handsets start coming out they get left behind. Sure, it's ultimately up to the carriers to purchase/bid on the phones they will carry, but being the #4 carrier by a big distance, they really don't have the chance to compete with "the big guys". You would think Google would pull a few strings to help push a decent handset to them... at least once. If the world were a fair place, T-Mo would be getting the Droid (luckily, it's not since I'm a VZW customer lol).

Android phones are great. I planned on getting a HTC Hero but will wait to see about N900. They both run Linux so yeah, "Go both of them!".

android is great, htc phones are awesome, but they are not good looking ones. they are more coorporate looking devices.

I work with mobile content and can tell you, normal users will never switch to android unless they start looking great.

Unfortnatly, device appearance is as import as the hardware.

HTC hero is was better looking than the first HTC android phone as it got the keyboard out and got the phone slimmer

Sony ericson xperia X3 will attract users. Supposed to be released in november. not sure if it was released yet.

The droid looks much better than the iphone (besides the idiotic lip they added to it). and since it is open source it is already 10x better than the iphone.
For instance there is a little patch to make the internet browser be multi touch compatible.
Anyway right now all android operating phones are in their youth, and when they start to grow up they will dominate the iphone which is already starting to look like an old piece of junk.

I absolutely agree with ethicks. I think the symbian os was a big factor in nokia having the upper hand a couple of years ago, because there was just so many applications around. Im looking to get a new phone, and im absolutely torn between the n900 and the moto droid(Ill have to wait a couple of months to get one). I cant wait to get a hands on experience of both the droid and maemo, and that will probably decide what i get. Right now, im probably leaning towards the n900, but thats just because i trust nokia, and i have owned a few great phones by them( 6630, N95 8gb). But that will certainly change if droid is good enough as maemo, because i have a thing for capacitive touch screens(why nokia, why??).

I think the lack of hype up until now is mostly due to the fact that until the droid, there wasn't a sufficient phone to adequately run Android. Sure, the G1 was great, but not iPhone great. Now Verizon has a contender, a really, sickeningly powerful phone to back it's map and customer service ratings. I think Android is now capable of really going places now that all of the key elements are in place.
