Before you do anything... go jailbreak it. Dev-Team Blog - redsn0w in june
After that you can download 3rd party apps that weren't approved by apple (tethering apps, etc) and you can also install installous, which is an installer app that has pretty much every app store app, except for free! I have about a thousand dollars worth of apps on my iphone and I haven't paid a cent.

Some of my favorites are:

Last.fm - a music app, type in an artist and it will create and stream a new radio station for you with the artist you chose and artists of the same genre.

Pdanet - Tether your iphone to your computer wirelessly or by usb.

Categories - Sort your apps into individual folders. (games, etc)

SBsettings - must have app, very handy to end processes, change all kinds of settings etc.

Jaadu RPG - a remote desktop client for windows (control you pc from anywhere in the world)

Snaptell - Take a photo of a book, cd, dvd, game etc and it will send the picture away, analyze it and give you instant price comparisons from amazon, etc.

Shazam - Your iphone will listen to anything a song analyze it and return the name, cd, artist even give you a direct link to a youtube video of the song (you can even hum a song into it)

Backgrounder - lets you run apps in the background, very handy when d/ling things etc.

Simplify music - Installs a server on your home pc and lets you listen to the music on your pc at home from anywhere in the world, provided you have 3g connection or wifi.

truphone - free calls (voip sorta setup)

phonezap - lets you create 30 sec ringtones from the music stored on your phone as you cant set the songs on your iphone as ringtones for some reason... prob so apple can get more money selling ringtones. (I did have an app that you could just select the song you wanted as a ringtone without editing etc but I restored my phone and lost the name of it)

For games I have:

psxforiphone - a playstation emulator, I play final fantasy 7 on my iphone, very cool, you need a 3gs to get decent gameplay though otherwise its too slow.

Assassins creed - havnt really played this much, great graphics though.

Wolfenstein 3d - I have 2 of these, the original and a new one made by ea games, the new one obviously has better graphics but i honestly prefer the old one.

Worms - self explanitory, very fun.

NES emulator - This is the only app ive ever paid for ($5 i think) but is very worth it, it comes with prob about 50 games including super mario bros 3 (my favorite) but I think u can add more roms too.

Real racing - move you iphone side to side to steer (auto-accelerate), great graphics.

I also have heaps of other games I cant be bothered writing descriptions on like sim city, doom, duke nukem 3d, fieldrunners, etc.

I could go on all day but those are some of my favorites. Check them out.

I also think JBing your iPhone is very necessary...

1.Assassin's creed - THE best game on iPhone
2.iGo my way - THE best GPS app ever, not just for iPhone
3.WunderRadio - very useful for radio
4.Fring - especially for SIP calls, it saves money from your bill..
5.IM+ with Push - THE best Instant Messaging program for iPhone

Top 5 not from AppStore
1.BackGrounder - Every JB'ed iPhone must have it..
2.Installous - If you don't want to pay that much on apps that is the way...
3.GameBoy4iPhone - I looove that emulator...
4.Cycorder - I steel use an iPhone 3G so it's a good app
5.Siphon - Also a good SIP app

Before posting i had already jailbrake it and got a huge torrent fronm funfile (12gb) with app and games

i played the assasins creed and i was really amazed with the quality. very fun to play :)

had also used pdanet as i read it is one the biggest reason why we jailbreak the phone :) Tested and now i am good to go for my trips to hawaii ;) going back there in october

Backgrounder: That is news to me. i didnt think we could do that with iphone

truphone: if i can setup the SIP on this one, it will be what i am looking for, as i have a voip account (i dont use skypeout for some reasons)

phonezap: that one i will never need. i work with mobile content. have then all lol.
psxforiphone : that one i will get for sure. i love playing FF too (rpg in general)

i will sure take a look at the Fring and siphon. i need to setup my voip. I think i used fring before on my WM phone. or was that what i used for instant messenger? dont remember

I downloaded worms 2 for Iphone, it's a great game to pick up and leave whenver you are on the train or waiting room. i.e when you don't have a lot of time but don't really want to be doing nothing either.

tested snaptell. it trully amazed me. didnt miss a single book !!! got all the ones i tested. incedible
