Default Privacy on An Android Device - Getting Around Google

Once you log in to Google market/places you're logged in for good unless you reset everything. I find most apps and android in general to be very anti-privacy. I've got a vpn running, have tweaked some privacy settings and turned off geo locating where I can. What are other best practices for total privacy on android that you use and have found effective without losing too much capability?

Well, I haven't bought any smart phone for this reason. The only thing I can think of is... not to sign in. Google loves whatever information they can get, and I haven't liked them since they decided that your use of one Google product meant that you must want to associate your entire life with them.

You could of course root your phone and install one of several open firmwares. The only part of your phone that need be non-free is the radio transmitter.

I actually am using a tablet but still, it's Android. It would be nice to have an alternative OS to android because let's face it, Google is Big Brother...
I'm going to reset it, not go to google places and just download apps that I install myself. I know Tizen, an open source os, is looking at a possible 2012 second quarter release. Samsung is interested since Google bought Motorola and are looking to get into the hardware market. That means Samsung feels they need a plan B other than Android.

I haven't really found any good privacy apps though - anyone have any suggestions? Also what are the best smart device app trackers out there?

I use Permissions Denied to control, as the name suggests, the permissions of all of my apps. I blocked from pretty much every app the access to the phone ID and other options for tracking. On the other hand Google doesn't implant tracking number in their phones, unlike Apple.

I'm a proud owner of a pretty much Google app free device, excluding the necessary system apps. It was kind of hard to find good alternatives to for example Google Reader and especially Google Calendar.

As far as I know a software/android tracker doesn't even exist and you are better of with using DDL forums or app markets.

If you need help feel free to PM me, but keep in mind that asking for an invite is not considered help.

Thanks @Magister, I'll be looking for Permission Denied. I bet Google will be planting tracking numbers when they release their own hardware.

Yep, Google is the worst kind of hypocrite - "Do no evil" should be "Do know evil". Just today it's been released that they have hired a DARPA director. That's the equivalent of what happened when the US hired ex Stasi director Markus Wolf to Homeland Security and we all know what those "safety experts" have been up to since. No privacy = no rights = bangs on the door at night and roundups.

There's an excellent little program called Location Cache that can first scare the crap out of you by showing you everywhere that your phone has tracked your location, and then, once you've calmed down, can block your phone from storing this info in future. It's a root app, but I assume that anyone who takes the time to consider their phone privacy has probably rooted their phone anyway.

Prior to the loss of my phone to a river while canoeing, I had rooted it, using Orbot I specifically targeted apps against tracking and data storage, for secured chats I used Gibberbot with can be used with any XMPP client that offers secured and encrypted chatting (Jabber, Pidgin, ect...) Titanium Pro *root* has the ability to remove not only pre-install apps, but hard apps.

Some great apps you've mentioned guys, I'll be sure to look into them once I get a new phone.

Privacy on any cellular device is non-existent.

    Same as on the Internet.

I was hoping to avoid having to root my phone, but after actually looking at most of the privacy apps, it seems that I'm going to have to. It's worth it, I guess.
