I have android 2.2 and I love it. As for the phone, make sure it can run it smoothly with the specs or else it's useless. I like how open android is but there are a few things I would change if I could, but to be honest you will be more happy with it more than any other phone's operating system.

I have a Samsung Epic phone running Anroid 2.2. I like it a lot, but it does matter what phone you have. It took mine forever to get 2.2 and I'm still waiting for 2.3, which is kind of a pain.

I've got an Samsung Galaxy S i9000. To be honest, I wouldn't take it if I want that "just works" feeling, I'd take an iPhone then. But if you have enough time to install and configure it, it is an absolutely amazing phone.

Why don't you get into the world of rooting and flashing new ROMS at WILL!!!

Have you seen the Samsung Galaxy S II? That phone is a beast!

I'm running aftermarket software on my EVO4G - and it dawned on the other day that there is no room for improvement.. it fills all my needs & wants that I see in a cell phone. It has fantastic battery life & I have it configured *just so* quite dreamy tbqh - I've never owned/used an apple product so I cannot compare the experience

Yeah, android all the way. The rooting/customisation is probably the best part of it, you can mess around with the thing for hours and get every last detail sorted out.
