No, you can use a fake MAC adress when cracking wep key :)

No this stuff is too complicated for me, i don't think i would be able to do it. Also im trying to get the simpler tutorial working but its just keeps saying buffering.

My problem with this always was the supported wifi cards and how hard it is to find the proper moniter mode drivers for them.

I cracked my neighbours WEP and it only took a few minutes. Amazing. Backtrack is a little complicated for me but the tutorial was fairly straightforward. Thanks.

You can find a copy of backtrack 3 still on torrent sites, it contains spoonwep which automates the entire process, all you need to know is the MAC address and channel of the AP you want to attack, this is easily found out with programs like netstumbler. Much easier for beginners

The tutorial doesn't metion anything about finding a wifi card that is compatible with backtrack, this can be a minefield and requires a bit of reading. Generally those based on Ralink or Atheros chipsets are fine, intel chipsets are a bit more hit and miss.

But hey if it was really that easy everyone would be doing it.

Exactly. I use 11:22:33:44:55, which might look suspicious gut hey, at least it's not yours.

And I agree with bkitching, I love Backtrack 3. It's slackware based, and SpoonWEP is a great GUI for WEP cracks.

There's all this information on how to crack WEPs, but you don't see those too often these days, at least in my experiences in wardriving. Most networks are WPA, which are a little difficult to crack. I've found cowpatty to be a good tool for WPAs, though it doesn't always work.

EDIT: bkitching, the Backtrack 3 final release is still available on the downloads page!

There is no way you are hacking into your school's wireless using this method. WEP is outdated and hardly used anymore.

I'm pretty sure I tried hacking a WEP password many years ago using Backtrack and it was very simple. Of course that was a time when there actually were WEP encryptions around. I haven't seen a wifi network protected with WEP in a long time, as most will use WPA or WPA II. I haven't looked it up recently, but WPA encryptions were extremely hard to crack if I remember correctly. Aside from advanced methods, I think the only easy way it to use brute force method. This basically tries one by one every possible password combination. The time this takes is obviously exponential in relation to the number of password characters. And if a password contains both lower and upper case, as well as numbers and symbols.. you can forget about brute force.
