Thread: Play MW2 on legit steam servers for free

While reading one the forums I frequent I came across a post about playing modern warfare 2 through a exploit found. I was skeptical but it had a few posts say “wow this works” so since I had the skidrow release installed to my desktop pc (for my little brother when he comes over) I thought what the hell ill give it a try. It works by basically tricking steam into thinking you are playing a demo of zero gear when you are actually playing Mw2 So you are not going to be playing on private servers, but legit steam. So I can now confirm this works 100% as of 12/27/2009.

(i will add pictures soon, im on my laptop making this tutorial)

Before getting started you will need

-MW2 (I used the skidrow release)

-Steam (I made a new account to be “safer”)

-Download this patch RapidShare: 1-CLICK Web hosting - Easy Filehosting

I’ve scanned the patch for virus’s and found nothing but you can scan if you want.

1.The first step is to download and install the zero gear demo here Zero Gear Demo on Steam

2.Once installed you need to go to your game list in steam and right click on zero gear, go to properties, update tab, and make sure you select “Do not automatically update this game”

3.Go to your steam dir e.g. \steam\steamapps\common\zero gear\Server\ and copy your entire mw2 directory contents into this folder

4.Extract the contents of common.rar into the corresponding directories starting with \steam\steamapps\common\ . I found I had to do this dir by dir but you can try to just extracting to \steam\steamapps\common\

5.Log into steam and play zero gear….. I mean mw2!

yea thats what the guide is for.

What I mean is, could this method be used with other games?

ohh sorry i misread that, no i dont think so as the files are made specifically for mw2

However, I think the credits go to Play MW2 With Crack
They even got an installer on there to simplify the process.
It definitely works too.
Just install steam, and Mw2 then run the installer.

Nice link kon i was unaware of that. I think he just packed it into a installer though since this work around originated on on the site i listed above.

It looks pretty good my little brother has been having a blast playing.

It won't last long, when MW2 updates to new patch which they do almost every week, it's over aging for people who don't play legit. Kinda frustrating i must say

they have beend oing this since Mw2 was released and everytime they were blown off by another patch because IW is aware of people playing cracked versions
