Default How to fix xBox360 RRoD

    Method One (Towel Trick):
    1. - Get your 360 and disconnect the AV cable and network cable so just the power cable is connected.
    2. - Wrap your 360 up in 2 or 3 towels and turn it on,
    3. - Leave it on for 20-25 minutes so it gets really hot,
    4. - Take off the towels and turn off your 360 then let it cool for 10-15 minutes,
    5. - Turn on your xBox again and hopefully it will work.
Note: I've tested this on a few consoles and it's just luck of the draw really. Sometimes it works and other times it doesn't.

    Method Two (More permanent fix):

I never had the balls to try the towel trick. I did replace the shitty thermal compound with arctic silver after my box RROD and it has been fine since and that was over a year ago.

The towel trick is basically remelting the thermal compound. If you take your xbox apart and look at the compound it looks like Microsoft hired blind chimps with parkinsons to apply it.

The towel trick is a terrible idea. Not only is the method temporary, it will only damage your xbox further. And your second method is basically the same as the first, as all you are doing is intentionally overheatting the xbox in order to melt the compound and reset the GPU and CPU. The only proven definitive repair for RROD is the x-clamp fix. I have done it myself on three consoles, all of which over 4 months later running perfectly. You can find tutorials for it all over google, just search for 360 x-clamp fix.

Gonna have to +1 mt3ch's comment. X-clamp is common place now. I would not risk damaging a RROD 360 even further with these towel tricks.

Heh, it's the truth...maybe I still have the pics I took of mine laying around...I was amazed at the lack of care taken in applying the compound.

It's not that the compound was applied sloppily, it's just that overtime the compound melts and runs over onto the motherboard, which partially along with the X-clamps causes RROD. MS did, however, make the mistake of using cheap thermal compound.

Correct, the choice of compound and the x-clamp itself are the problem spots. I can only compare it to trying to connect a battery to your car using duct tamp instead of tightly secured battery cables.

Why bother using the duct tape when you know it will fail at the worst possible time.

Here is the best way to fix it. Throw it in the trash and then buy a PS3. Ha, no really I have both and Netflix is the only reason I touch the 360 anymore.

OR to actually add something useful, go buy a new one and put the old one in the box, then return it to the store. Works at stores with less than caring individuals working there. Like RadioShack or Target. Only catch is it has to be in decent looking condition, they have to not check serial numbers, and you have to package it up all pretty. May take a few tries, but someone will neglect to look at it properly.
