Greets,
If you're like me, you have to use many different computers during the day and working in a consolidated environment would be a definitive plus. In my case, I have many classes in different rooms (or even buildings) and every one of them has different settings.
The problem with traditional remote access solutions over VPN is that depending on how restrictive the host is about software installation and port management you might not be able to do it at all.
Enter 3 free pieces of software that will allow you to access remotely your work space from pretty much any computer that's not severely crippled by IT policies:
LogMeIn Free
Phone Factor (not required but very boss)
Dropbox (refer link boosts Dave's account as a thank you for T-I)
LogMeIn runs from most browsers and the various browser plugins allow it to do so full screen with very low performance degradation if both the end-user and the host system have decent connections.
The Free version comes with a whole lot of integration features like automatic printer connection. The only limitation of the free version is that you can't share the local network with the remote machine so file transfer to and from the host is disabled.
Enter's Dropbox, where you just share the files you need from the host and recover them from db's web client, a USB stick client or any number of other ways.
Phone factor adds a second layer of security on your remote connection where your computer actually calls you up and challenges the connection by confirming it's really you that's attempting to log on.
I don't have the time to do a detailed write up on how to install and use these, but look into them, you won't regret it.
Further remote access pimp points can be had by using a VM to act as host, therefore preventing your boss or teacher from seeing your mass amounts of porn and other questionable content on your physical machine.
My favorite VM software remains VMWare after years of use. There might be others out there that are free or arguably better (depending on what you want) but the ease of use is incredible and allows you to run pretty much any OS.
As always, if you have any questions just ask!
