@scarlettohara - I didn't read Insomnia but from the other two I recommend The Shining. I recommend first to read the book and then to watch the movie because although Stanley Kubrick is an important and big director, the movie is not as great as the book. :D
All the greats have been mentioned, so I won't mention those. One that hasn't been mentioned though is Stand by me or "the body"
EDIT: Oh damn I can't believe I forget the shawshank redemption! Great as well. The movies were done really well too

Strangely enough, I was unable to get into The Dark Tower series.
1. The Stand - Truly an epic tale, woven with such intricate detail and character development, you can't help but shed a tear by the end.
2. Misery - Never have I felt such empathy for a character, nor found a book with such an appropriate title.
As terrible as it is to admit, as an avid reader, I have yet to read his other books! Next on the list for me to read it IT.
my top 5:
Tommyknockers
Christine
Misery
IT
Insomnia
I have only read a handful of his books, but I can give you an appraisal of them.
Christine - I liked it a lot. The teen drama backdrop was fitting for the time period in which I read the book, and the suspense builds in a very good way. The book is creepy without being too over the top scary, and it was a fun read.
Salem's Lot - If you like vampires, check this one out. It is as supernatural as it gets.
Cell - The premise is somewhat interesting, but the book failed to deliver for me. It seemed too influenced by other zombie apocalypse type works that I had trouble enjoying it as an original piece of writing.
The Bachman Books - Definitely get this collection if you can. It is comprised of several works which Kingwrote under the pseudonym Richard Bachman. Rage is one of them, and it is no longer published because it inspired a string of school shootings. The Running Man is well-known and inspired the Schwarzenegger movie of the same name. The Long Walk is terrific, and contains elements which later appeared in Battle Royale and the Hunger Games. Road Work, I believe it's called, is also enjoyable.
Hope that helps!
