How To Setup A Media/File Internet Server
This is a simple thing to do so I won’t make the steps hard to understand, I will even provide pictures so you can read this to your kids at night before bed =D. just a few things I will say now if you don’t have internet with at least 250Kb/s upload don’t bother if you don’t have admin privileges don’t bother If you are known to download viruses don’t bother and seek help from someone smart like Katie or any admin/pu/tm ect ect to help fix your problem(don’t take too much of their time though they are not counselors and they might start charging you for help) **Minimum requirements** a computer Windows Vista Or Windows 7 A Internet connection with at LEAST 250-350Kb/s upload(this speed will only allow 1 user and only SD) Hamachi K-Light codec pack (standard pack) {on both ends} Organized Media Area (not required but more files =more searching/settings to make) **Recommended Specs** A computer Windows 7 A internet connection with 1MB/s+ Upload (this speed will allow 3+users for HD content and 5+users for SD content depending on network variables) Hamachi K-Light codec pack (mega pack) {on both ends} Organized Media Area (once again for ease of setup) Step 1: Setting up your computer install K-Light codec pack Then open network and sharing center Click Change Advanced sharing Settings Make your settings page the same as in this picture (make sure streaming is set to allow all) yay! Your computer is now set to allow streaming. Step 2etting what to stream Go to the properties page for the start bar click on customize Set Video's to "display as link" Right click properties on the video folder click "include folder" choose the folder you want then select "include folder" yay! now it knows what to stream. Step 3:setting up hamachi go setup an account at LogMeIn -->https://secure.logmein.com/login.asp Install Hamachi in the program go to system "attach to log me in account" use the email you made your account with you must do this for ALL clients you intend to use on this server then log into the site and go to join requests to allow them (sorry no pic i already did this and option is gone after that" make a network ON THE WEBSITE not hamachi it has the option but dont use it. you have been warned set the network as a hub and spoke set what computers will act as hubs (computer('s) that are hosting the files) set computers that will be spokes (computers getting files) yay! now your computers are connected over the net. Step 4: Making sure everything works this needs no pictures just open WMP and go to videos the bottom right should show it "updating" things wait till thats done (can take awhile based on number of files) once its done open WMP on the remote computer (they can be on same net so long as hamachi is on its ok) go to remote library's select the host computer go to videos do the same things wait. yay! step 4 over if something didn't work look over that you did not miss anything **NOTE** the remote library does not always show up right away depending on network variables it could take some time. Step 5: Making things play smooth in WMP Settings go to Performance Tab and set buffer time to 60sec Yay! alright that's it for the streaming area everything should work fine **NOTE** when you try to open a file it may seem like WMP is doing nothing but if you look at the top left while moving your mouse you will notice its buffering. with a 60buffer it can take some time so just wait its to ensure smooth playback.
