The default Firefox 3 toolbar contains standard browser options such as back, forward, refresh, and stop. Those of you who often utilize features such as browsing history and print may want to add these options to your toolbar. Firefox allows such behavior, and it also allows you to create a new toolbar with the options of your choice. This can all be accomplished in just a few minutes through the browser's Customize Toolbar feature.
First, open your Firefox browser.
Click on View in your Firefox menu, located at the top of your browser window. When the drop-down menu appears, scroll over the option labeled Toolbars. At this point, a sub-menu will appear. Click on the option labeled Customize..., located at the bottom of this sub-menu.
The Customize Toolbar dialog should now be overlaying your main browser window. At the bottom you will see a button labeled Add New Toolbar. Click on this button.
A New Toolbar dialog will now appear, asking you to enter a name for your new toolbar. Enter the desired name in the edit field provided and click OK.
Your new toolbar has now been created and is located directly below your default toolbar. At this point, it is basically just an empty space. Now you need to add the options that you desire. In the Customize Toolbar dialog you will see all of the options currently available, each of them labeled with text as well as an icon. To add an item, simply click on your choice and drag it (by holding down your left mouse button after clicking) to the toolbar. Once your cursor is located on top of your new toolbar, depress your mouse button.
You can add as many options as you wish to your new bar, space permitting. When adding new items, you may want to use the Separator to place in between each one. You also have the option of adding Space or Flexible Space in between items on your toolbar.
After items have been added to the toolbar, you can modify their positioning simply by dragging them back and forth to the location you desire.
At the bottom of the Customize Toolbar dialog, there is a checkbox labeled Use Small Icons. By default, this option is turned off. However, if you wish to display a smaller set of icons in your Firefox toolbars, simply check this box. You will notice the change in your browser window immediately. To switch back to the default icon size, simply remove the check mark from the box. Please note that this option affects all off your Firefox toolbars, not just the newly created one.
The Customize Toolbar dialog allows you to modify the appearance of your toolbar items in regards to their icon and text labels. At the bottom of the window is a drop-down menu labeled Show, containing the following options:
- Icons and Text: Displays both labels, icon and text, for each of your toolbar items.
- Icons: Displays only icons for each of your toolbar items.
- Text: Displays only text for each of your toolbar items.
Please note that this selection affects all of your Firefox toolbars, not just the newly created one.
To remove an item from any of your Firefox toolbars, simply drag it to a blank space on the Customize Toolbar dialog. You can always move any of these items back to a toolbar at a later time. This functionality also gives you the ability to move buttons from one toolbar to another, using the Customize Toolbar dialog as a type of scratch pad.
