Those guides look terribly complex O_O One can just use remote desktop function to control the seedbox PC without all that stuff. Everything takes 5 min.

As for pooh's question about hardware:
One will need a usual PC, but with 2 network ports (for internet and for your usual PC) and no monitor.
You can go with either ready NAS config (google it) which is expensive and not very good performing or with your own build which is cheap, fast (for it's purpose) but takes time to choose and assemble.

As you're most likely going to run it 24/7, look for something silent.

And do remember that max home connection speed is 100 Mbit for one line and some seedboxes offer up to 2x1 Gbit.

since you have to get a 100MB/100MB connection that will cost a LOT (probably more than to rent a seedbox), i'd stick with the solution everybody uses.

I'm using my old notebook as seedbox. It is connected to router with uTorrent webUI installed on it.

I would rather go for Home Server machine.
Something like i3 processor with h57 chipset motherboard + 4 gigs of ram.
In addition to that You could get SAS Controller which would allow You to setup some nice disk array (i.e. Adaptec makes nice SAS Controllers).
Would get some small case for that (i.e. Fractal Design R3) and some silent PSU like OCZ ModXtreme.

You can set it up either on Windows Server or Linux.
I won't talk about Linux (You have many options there) because I'm using Windows solution.

It works basically with uTorrent and webUI on it :)
If need any further explanation please say so :)

im looking into this myself, one option I came across is one of the NAS with built in torrent client, this bufalo brand claim to have a modded version of utorrent in theirs, but would that be allowed for use in private trackers?

see here for the manufacturers description: LinkStation Live LS-CHL Network Storage | Buffalo Technology

another idea I had was to buy any old nas system, say one similar to the 2tb drive: [ame="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Seagate-GoFlex-Home-Multimedia-Drive/dp/B003XFUXQK/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1295381438&sr=8-2"]here[/ame]

stick some linux distro on it then rutorrent or whatever. Is it possible?

These are just some of the things im thinking of pooh, hopefully someone here will be able to tell us which would be better (or possible). What I like about these ready made nas systems is that they are small and quiet, ready to be hidden away almost anywhere!

I would rather recommend WD MyBook WorldEdition, especially important is that it has white stripe on front.

It's normally not really all that functional device, but it has an option to enable SSH.
Then You can SSH into the box, and basically install anything that runs on linux, including linux torrent clients.
It runs really well at my friends place, and it's not all that hard to configure :)

Do you mean a usual seedbox? Just google it. Example, use google translate on this one. If you mean a home one than at the same place where you buy usual PC parts/PCs.
