Default Converting HD files to a format compatible with ps3 media server

As you probably know the ps3 does not currently support .wmv video files among others. I am looking for a way to convert files not supported by the ps3. I am streaming the files through the ps3 media server program. Sometimes I use Windows Media Player but I found that the ps3 media server program works best but even that is not always reliable. I have also tried TVersity and did not have much success with that one. Maybe it was beyond my comprehension. I don't know. I just like to be able to start the program and directly tap into my hard drive instead of having to load the files into the program.

I have tried using HDConverToX (along with the 4 other programs you have to install for it to work) and could not get through a 9 gb .wmv file because it was going to take way too long. I'm talking weeks! Is it supposed to take that long? I don't know.

I have heard that handbrake is one of the more user friendly programs but at a cost of less options.

So if you can tell me the fastest, easiest way to convert non ps3 supported hd video files into an acceptable format that would be great!Or if you know of a better media server program and would like to share that information that would also be great.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Thanks but I did try xilisoft and it said it converted the files but when I tried to watch them through the ps3 media server program it gave me an error message that said "the data is corrupt" or "unsupported format".

I don't know what happened it just never worked for me.

    Thanks anyway.

Handbrake software is very easy to use. It can read in just about any media format you can find. If you select the normal profile and mp4 file output, it should play back in the PS3.

There is a freeware call iWisoft which is a universal all in one converter similar to Xilisoft that has a bunch of built in profile specifically for the PS3. It's very easy to use also.

Thanks guys for all your suggestions but do these programs convert audio too? I think the ps3 only supports ac3, aac, and mp3. Maybe .wav too. I am not sure.

The following types of files can be played under (Music).

    • Memory Stick Audio Format(ATRAC)
    • MP3
    • - MPEG-1/2 Audio Layer3
    • - MP3 Surround
    • MP4(MPEG-4 AAC)
    • WAVE(Linear PCM)
    • WMA

Personally I use PS3video9. I just check the original file with MediaInfo to see the bitrates etc, and then simply select one of the custom profiles I have setup specifying common video/audio bitrate combinations. Or you can just use the videowizard profile and it will do that for you.

It does require some hefty cpu resources though since you are re-encoding the file. If its an mkv file you are much better off using mkv2vob, which simply repackages the container and is quite quick.

Handbrake can also convert the audio. For example, if the source is DTS it can be converting to AAC, AC3 or MP3.
