    Default Torrenting at University

Hey! I am new to this site and excited to have just become a member. Will using a private torrent tracker keep me safe from losing access to University internet? I know my school's policy is not too strict because I have used Demonoid for a while but I figure it is a good time to quit while I am ahead. I am hoping to find a way to continue torrenting and seeding while living on campus and I just wanted to know if this is possible or if it is wishful thinking. If it is possible, how so? Thanks!

the safest option is to use a seedbox and download from that.

Torrenting will still use the same amount of bandwidth regardless of if it's a private or public tracker. The network admins will be able to tell that you're torrenting...whether they care or not is another story (probably not).

Hmm.. whether or not you're using a private tracker your university can still tell if you're downloading torrents. Take a look at PeerBlock and PeerGuardian. These programs can block educational lists and anti-p2p organizations.

How does a seedbox work and what are the benefits of using one?

Probably not. Each school has different policies when it comes to internet usage. Yours might be allowing access demonoid but it doesn't mean that they allow torrenting in general. It's always a good idea to check with your school's IT department.

a seedbox is an external computer that you hire and download from and too. the advantages are ur not using the university's network for bittorrent, only to download the file from the seedbox which you can do securely. also you would use less download quota(if you have a quota) because you do not need to seed from uni.

also seedboxes are usually very fast and can help your ratio.

Do seedboxes cost monthly fees and are there free ones?

Yep, you're basically renting a computer and the hard disk space and bandwidth it comes with. They're not horribly expensive, though. You can get a decent one for about twenty dollars a month if you look around a bit.

Sometimes people do give away seedbox use here though -- there's actually a forum just for it. It works like tracker invites do though, so you'll want to have proof of ratios, speedtests, and such.

There's also a forum for seedbox reviews and discussion.

another thing i could suggest is to only use encrypted peers in your client although i dont know if that will make a difference.

the problem is that your actually on the university's network so i think even using a blocklist might not do anything. i'm surprised they don't block bittorrent traffic.
