Default Uploading torrent to private tracker

OK guys just want to start by thanking the people responsible for setting this site up and also alowing me to join despite the fact I am not part of any tracker sites yet.

    My question is this:

What are the risks involved in uploading content that you do not legally have the authority to distribute among private trackers? Are there any private tracker sites set up to catch people out?

I know that keeping a good ratio is paramount to continued membership of certain tracker sites and without initially uploading content i know it will be difficult to maintain the 1.0+ ratio required for membership.
So my theory is to upload anything the site does not have that will get d/led to maintain this ratio, am i at significant risk of being prosecuted? I am in Australia and mostly am downloading or uploading tv shows and movies.

Since receiving two emails forwarded on from isp created by watch dog groups warning me I am a little apprehensive about personally uploading the intial torrent file.

I've never seen a tracker created just to bust people... it wouldn't last long.
I also never heard of anyone who had been persecuteed for uploading stuff to private trackers, maybe only the extreme uploaders at OiNK, but i'm not sure.

I think it is safe for you to upload, as long as it is not a public tracker, and the trackers usually have an option to hide the uploader.

Just don't upload. Since you're new, concentrate on downloading and seeding the traditional way. This is enough to maintain good ratio at a decent site. As you get a second tracker, use them both to cross seed. I recommend IPT for general/0day content. This is easy enough to seed to and has awesome content you can use to cross seed.

Given some time you will learn the ins and outs of uploading your own content. If by then you're still concerned with annonymity you can opt to use a VPN tunnel service or a dedicated/shared seed box.

    Cheers Ivyking, and welcome.

Private trackers are more secure than public trackers, for the most part. Few of them use public (read: easily viewed) hosts and are less traceable. Nearly anything is obtainable by authorities nowadays, though, so while you will have extra security, most of the illegal downloaders that are being hit are downloading from public trackers (limewire, thepiratebay, etc.) In regard to private trackers setting people up: use your best judgment and reserach the tracker. The forums here have a great review system set up if you have any doubts (Tracker Reviews - Torrent Invites - Get your free private torrent tracker invites!). Keep in mind that some sites utilize bonus points or allow for gifting upload (and giveaways like that are found here: http://www.torrent-invites.com/bonuses/), and are a wonderful place to start.

Keeping a good ratio is the golden rule. If you're uploading the file from your hard drive to other peers in the tracker, you're at just as much risk as if you were downloading it. Here is a good website to check out for Aussie-specific legislation: Filesharing, Stealing and Enforcement: Australian Filesharing Law

If you're already being checked out, you could look into alternatives. Getting a seed box would be a great start (and would be amazing in assisting your ratio for harder to maintain sites), and some are even given away freely for a set amount of time here (Free Seedboxes - Torrent Invites - Get your free private torrent tracker invites!).

Yeah, there is aways other ways o keep a good ratio, but i think uploading is the easiest one since you don't have any incoming traffic, it is all profit... and good luck trying to have a good ratio at trackers like What/Waffles without uploading anything.
Remember that many trackers have a minimum number of uploaded torrents in order to advance classes, i doubt anyone ever got busted for that.

Personally i love to upload, the thought of adding something new to a tracker is a really good sensation, so i do it whenever i can, even if the tracker is ratioless.

I have a 1.4 ratio at What and have only uploaded a few local CDs that weren't really downloaded, it's all about efficiently managing upload and download. But yeah, the torrent upload requirement is a strict one at almost all higher level trackers, and is widely encouraged, so upload what you can and reap the benefits! Fractal, your fantastic attitude toward adding something new to a tracker is refreshing; thanks for thinking of others when working through a tracker. : ))

All great tips peeps, I looked at VPN before joining here but i couldn't find any that were free and i have the attitude George Costanza has with parking/prostitutes "why pay for something when if i apply myself enough i can get it for free"

I will do some research on seed boxs and cross seeding and try and join a couple trackers and see how things go in my grace period with regard to traditional seeding if i get booted or have to donate i'll rethink my approach.

    cheers people.

The best way to maintain ratio is to out-seed as well. I would consider seeding freeleech stuff (if your tracker has that). I've done over 10 tb upload credit via out-seeding and it works wonders. (that means you download from one spot and help seed it at another in case you didn't know)

Can't say I ever heard of out-seeding, this sounds dangerous. Meaning downloading a .torrent from one place and seed it to another. This is almost always against a tracker's rules.

Cross seeding is downloading a .torrent from one tracker to completion and then finding that file on another tracker. Then you download the .torrent from the second tracker and cross seed. It's important to have two instances of the same .torrent in your client.
