Default RE: Laptop adjust brightness problem

I have a MSI laptop model PR 200. After upgrading from Vista (License) to Windows 7 (unlicense), I couldn't adjust the brightness anymore. When press FN & F4/F5 the indicator shows up and down but the brightness stays and doesn't react. I tried adjusting through right click power battery by using the slider but still no reaction. Tried also adjusting through Windows mobility center by sliding again but still no reaction. I know the FN key is working properly because there's no problem with volume adjustment. I tried to go back to Vista(license) again and installed the appropriate drivers hoping it will return to normal but this time it won't work anymore. BTW, Prior to upgrading, the adjustment for brightness is ok. I updated the video card driver (VGA), installed System Control Manager but still no success. The display adapter is Mobile Intel(R) 965 express chipset family. All is working well except for the brightness adjustment. I hope somebody here can help me out on this matter. I'm loosing a lot of hair with this:001_smile:.

P.S. Is software or driver incompatibility installation can damage a hardware? Asked some techs and the answer is no. Still want to know your knowledge about this.

Hoping for an answer. Thanks very much

looks like you have a driver issue, just goto your vendor support page (driver download section) and search for the driver that does control brightness and etc... for HP its alps pointing-device driver not sure abt MSI

as for your reply to P.S= no hardware dont get damaged if any driver is not properly installed or even not installed.. but yes preformance is affected because it cant carry out its all functions due to lack of appropriate drivers

    hope this helped!

P.S if u still aint able to get it right try downloading applications like driver genius and etc, u can get its cracked version on torrents easily

try pressing WINDOWS button + x and use the slider there. If that dont work, try using FN (normal method) afterwards.

a silly question but have you tried udjusting brightness while on ac power,
also have read that it could be a ram problem as the video card does use some ram, have you also tried power options (select a power option) from
balanced to high performance I cant see how upgading operating system would cause this issue but then again anything is possible. I hope you find the problem,

I'd like to add that if you do install a improper drive, sometimes it can muck with other stuff in the OS. I have had that happen before. In this case you would need a tool to remove that driver completely (hence why Driver Sweeper exists).

If you have any trouble finding a driver from the manufacturers website, post your hardware VEN and DEV info. You can get it from Device Manager under the Hardware Device's properties...

Hi mate, thanks for the reply. Actually I also included in my post that I got back to my previously installed Vista which is licensed and also installed the necessary drivers that is included in the package so I'm pretty sure the drivers are correct. But after the vista installation, I've noticed that the drivers for some didn't installed like wireless card, Upek fingerprint..etc. i have to manually install it through internet not with the package driver. I think the question would be how can I do a clean up on my hard disk before installing an OS again in order to delete conflict drivers? My laptop cannot install XP because of some issue involving Vista. Is Driver Sweeper delete unnecessary drivers mate? Or you have other method? Please help further. Thanks

P.S. The current supported drivers for Driver sweeper are NVIDIA (Display and Chipset), ATI (Display), Creative (sound), Ageia (Physx), MMouse and Realtek (sound).

hi mate wondering how you went with your lappy, gave it some thought today and i think that when install windows 7 you dont need to install any drivers as windows 7 configures evrything during install. upgrading i think is not a good idea as there are to many chances of conflict happening ( a clean installl is always best) I beleve the hot key would only work with vista and msi hardware as thats what that driver was made for. maybe after trying to go back to vista, the drivers are corrupted. I dont think if installing windows 7 that hot key would ever work. I found a link on how to restore laptop back to factory settings but couldnt find anything for your particalar model so please if you decide to take this action make sure you understand the possibilities of
something going wrong. most laptops have got a restore copy burned on drive for times like this maybe even contacting msi wouldnt be a bad idea.
personally i would just install a clean copy from boot of windows 7 (which is a lot beter than vista) and hope you can change brightness through windows
    MSI Product Spec.

    good luck

Check BIOS. Also, I had same issues on my HP ProBook, but since I'm not PC nerd or smth., plugging out an AC cord and then plugging it in always helped me. :) Oh, another solution for the problem, if I'm not lazy or the power cord is too far is to go to Personalize, then Power Management and reduce the brightness and then raise it. Sorry for n00b advices. :)

Well if your looking to do a clean install, you will need to boot off your installation media and choose the drive to install to, and when it tells you there is a previous installation you tell it you want to do a clean install and format the drive.

However thoe, that doesn't seem like it will be your solution becuase you are already using drivers that have been manually installed.

Also depending on how you went back to vista from windows 7 (if you used a factory restore) some of them don't do a full restore and with drivers.

My recommendation at this point would be to go to windows 7 install your drivers as normal. Then perhaps there is some software that is missing to get a fully functional brightness control. (a program) I know some Sound drivers won't function properly without there software (SoundMAX). What is your computers model exactly. The one you gave before looks to be a series number. Check the bottom. IE; a Toshiba could be A205-S6812

Feel free to PM me, and maybe we can arrange some 1:1 and see what I can do to help you.

Thanks for the reply mate. Right now I already send my MSI PR200 laptop to the service center. If nothing happens, I'll PM you for more tips. Thanks again
