I think everybody in the world has Linksys. Linksys is the lower brand for Cisco...one of the top networking product manufacturers.

I also have a Netgear and it's worked fine for me for a long time.

I have some experience with Asus router WL500gP V1. It's a wifi router with 4 LAN ports, 1 WAN and 2 USB ports. After 2 years of using it start continuously rebooting and come to be not a good buddy for networking. So I return it back to vendor and get a new one WL500gP on Version 2. It runs pretty good now. But I want more services from router than only packet forwarding. So I found a fine firmware with plenty of software origin by cool developer Oleg and continuously updated by other Russian groups. I changed the fw with sw and now it give me exacly what I need. A home seedbox with other services like FTP, WWW, ruTorrent, SMB etc.

So when Asus sw isn't as good as it could be it can be replaced by other and you will get much more from just simple router. I didn't tried much routers but I can recommned it now with some references. And I am almost forget. You can connect to internet through 3G/CDMA or WiMAX thanks new fw by Oleg. Could be handy in future time in some desert or any jungle :).

Thanks but It's hard to find AVM on the local shops here, I can't buy online.

Among these routers which do you think is the best and is an ADSL modem + router in one solution

Neither is an ADSL modem + WiFi router in 1. But other then that both look good, but I'd look up some reviews on signal strength first, cuz of the internal antennas.

Just remember, an ADSL modem + WiFi router solution will obviously be more expensive, I think a good one can set you back $80 (USD). Like I said before, if all you have is a basic ADSL modem then configuring a router shouldn't be too difficult.

its best to separate the modem and router, unless its much cheaper to get a combo.
on the linksys wrt54gl that i use, i have installed dd-wrt firmware which has made the router far superior.

There are cheaper combos out there like ones made by TP-Link and other smaller companies, but personally I don't trust the build quality of those things...

You should get the WRT54G-TM pre-loaded kit with DD-WRT (alternate firmware, much better thant the stock one) + heatsink (for overclocking) at eBay.

It´s ultra-cheap ($50) and veeery good ! There are various sellers with this pack, even with higher gain antennas for a little extra ($60 ~ $70 total). The router has plenty of
    memory (32mb versus 8mb ~ 16mb regular models) and runs DD-WRT smoothly.

If you want gigabit switch + wireless-n should look elsewhere, but if not, then look no further !

uhh...overclocking routers? o_0 How's that supposed to work?

P.S. Don't you normally need to attach a PCI card in order for your PC to work with Wireless-N?

Yes.. The router is like a "mini-computer" that run (generally) a very small linux based operating system.

It has a processor... And it can be overcloked ! Not much really, but like
from 200mhz to 240mhz is pretty easy. :001_smile:

For wireless-N you a need a wireless-N based wireless network adapter. If you have a PC with a wireless-G card you need to replace it with a -N adapter. Is a different standar, that needs different hardware to work.

errr do u need extended wireless coverage and also faster wireless speed?? u would need to fork out slightly more if u need those..

and also do u plan to on 24x7?? I just had a linksys wireless all-in-1 overheat and went kaboom few weeks ago. It lasted only for 2 months but i've also had another linksys setup for my parents that had not gave me any problems for 5 years....

Now i'm experimenting with a generic brand all-in-1 placed on top of a laptop cooler but it's too soon to tell about the durability.. Speed wise, it's the same with the linksys
