    Default PS3 M2TS files and External hard-drives

I have a PS3 and I download M2TS files to play off it. My question is how do you people play them on your PS3? do you put the file on a USB key or External hard-drive. I ask because my PS3 does not seem to recognize either of my extrenal hard-drives, they are both western digital hard drives. I also know you can burn them with IMG burn for play off the PS3, but is there anyway to burn M2TS files for play on a standard DVD/Bluray player?

I play mine off an external Western Digital drive. First thing you have do is make sure your hard drive is formatted as FAT32. FAT32 means that each file can be a maximum of 4GB hence why the PS3 Team make their encodes at that size. You can use this tool to format your drive.

Then when your drive comes up in the XMB menu you have to hover over it and press triangle and then select "Display All". You'll then be able to see all the content you've put onto your drive. Hope that helps. :001_smile:

so basically I would have to buy a new one and format it that way before putting all my files on it because there is no way I'm reformatting and loosing all my files as I have no where else to put them. Oh well thanks for answering my question it is greatly appreciated.

Is there any way to split the drive into two partitions and only format one?

well i got an external iomega 1tb drive, i formatted a partition in fat32 but as far as i know i think the fat format have a limit, i put 24gb on mine, and uploaded some videos to the usb and them plugged it into the ps3, it recognized it fast, you could try that.

there is another way too, there is a program called HFS.

1- download it and install it.
2- click on menu and them click add files and add a file that is compatible with the ps3.
3 - ok now here is what you have to do open your ps3 internal browser and write the ip that is on the HFS window into the ps3 browser.
4 - now you have two choises first one is to stream your movie directly from your pc or you can download it into the ps3 by pressing the triangle button go to file and choose save as.

i'm really bad explaining xd, but you can look a tutorial about hfs + ps3.

There is a way you can put M2TS files on a 4G DVDR to play on a standard DVD/Bluray player. It called AVCHD. It has to meet spec tho.
If it meet the spec on the chart on the bottom, you can remux the M2TS to files the you can burn on disc using nero 5. PS3-TEAM release movie in this format and you can just remux it with tsMuxeR to AVCHD. Play it on bluray player also by bass the cinavia. I use to do this all this time PS3-TEAM, but can't find them anymore. Guess i'll work on a tutorials, how to make a AVCHD.

For quite some time I used the PS3 Media Server. You don't need to have an external formatted as FAT32. You do need your PC to stream the data to your PS3 though which can be done wireless or using a standard cable. For encodes better than 720p (BluRay apparently, HDTV or similar are fine. It basically depends on your wireless' network speed), I'd recommend to go wired.

    Hope it helps
