    Default Internet Connectivity Issues

I was hoping one of you might be able to help.

Signus' computer suddenly went offline tonight. One minute it was connected to the Internet fine, the next it was gone. He is running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit edition. This is a wired connection.

Here are the errors he is getting:

    • windows can't communicate with the device or resource (primary DNS server)
    • Your computer appears to be correctly configured, but the device or resource (www.microsoft.com) is not responding.
    • The DNS server isn't responding

This isn't a configuration issues with Windows because no other computers in his house can get online either. And like I said, he was online one minute and then off the next.

Does anyone have any insight that could help? I'd be incredibly grateful.

What type of internet connection is it? DSL, Cable, satellite, ..?

The first thing you should always try is restarting your modem and/or router.

Yes, tried that. Also tried restarting the computer. Obviously, that was fruitless since none of the computers in his house are able to get online.

    It's a DSL connection.

    What he said.

Beyond that, troubleshooting is usually pretty easy. The only time it becomes difficult is if you have to authenticate (PPPoE or similar) with a username and password configured on the router. 99% of people forget these credentials and then end up having to call their provider for them.

There are plenty of self explanatory status lights on modern routers and modems. You obviously want to see Internet or WAN illuminated. I think the old school DSL modems have a Sync light that needs to be illuminated.
