hey there. i'm just new on Torrentleech and am trying to sort out the best way to build up my ratio successfully. I noticed that all the new material has a 48hr wait time for new members, so can't do the usual scenario of hopping on a fresh torrent and letting it seed for a few days. Any pointers out there?

Yes mate what you can do is find a torrent on the website that you already possess on your hard drive particularly something big that will be required long term.
My tip is a Xbox 360 or PC game. It's big and there's always people downloading them.
You hop on the torrent and seed it to the tracker this is will build up a buffer of huge upload which will get rid of the wait times completely with time and then you can download a new torrents and seed up more .
By the your ratio will be huge and you can conduct usual torrent activities with putting less emphasis on watching if this will drop your ratio hugely.

Well,the best choice is to cross-seed mate.Get any torrent from other tracker and seed it on TL too.Other good strategy is to download packs.In time you'll get a big buffer with them.After you get rid of the wait time jump on the new TV episodes,games and new movies.This way you'll buffer your account and you can start enjoy the tracker.

I would recommend re-seeding, as others have. Just find the same torrent on a public tracker. Good luck :)
as other precious members stated, cross-seeding is your best bet, as I also recently started an account there at TL and built up a decent ratio using cross-seeding
In order to build my ratio I downloaded some big movie packs from IPT (they were freeleech there anyhow) and cross-seeded. It only took about a week to reach power user and to build up a decent buffer when I did that.
You can do what I did and Donate off the bat, get invites, and remove the wait times. And you can get 3Months of VIP access for fairly cheap. LOL

ok. working well! occassionally though i was finding a problem where i would download a movie from one tracker. and then get the same exact torrent from TL, once my seedbox checked the data though, it would come up slightly different and then it wouldn't go. Any ideas why this would be happening? For example, on a movie that's broken up into RARs, all of the files would show at 100%, except maybe one or two of the RAR files only showing as 80%....?
