I've seen a lot of people on here talking about seedbox, but I'm not very familiar with this. What exactly is it used for?
From the Seedbox FAQ:
(The same question has been asked a few days ago here.)A seedbox is the term for when users of the torrent community use a dedicated server or VPS to increase their upload on trackers. A seedbox normally has a very fast connection (anywhere between 10Mb/s to 1000Mb/s) and is accessed remotely by the user. They can be rented on a month by month or yearly basis. The fast speed allows for users to achieve high ratios on torrents very easily, thus increasing their upload to the tracker.
Seedboxes can range anywhere from ~$40 a month all the way up to however large your check book is. The cream of the crop servers are the latest technology processors with terabytes of hard drive space and a 1Gb/s (1000Mb/s) connection.
So is this something that is run from my computer, or is it online? In other words, will it continue to seed even if my computer disconnects from the internet?
No it has nothing to do with your computer. Just imagine it as a computer that is sitting on a shelf far away thats is downloading / uploading for you.
You can connect to the computer via web to control the bittorrent client, and you can connect via FTP to download the files you've snatched.
Of course, it gets more complicated when you talk about dedicated, semi-dedicated, shared slots, VPN, shell access etc.. but basically just think of it as a remotely controlled computer that is online 24/7.

it just like a computer have a high speed you download torrent files on it and take it to your personal computer hopefully can help![]()
Just imaging you are a network manager and the seedbox is just one of your branches.
It does not have to be close to you, maybe 10,000 miles away. You manage the seedbox through WebUI or some commands to pass the torrent to the client on the seedbox, and the seedbox will run as what you usually do on a bittorrent client on your own computer. And most seedboxes have FTP or similar services to transfer the files to your computer.
In addition to what's already been said, you can build your own seedbox and keep it at your home, if you want. Instead of running uTorrent (or the client of your choice) on your computer, you'd have some other client on the seedbox that would run 24/7. rTorrent, Transmission, and Deluge seem to be very popular clients/GUIs right now.
In layman's terms, seedbox is simply your best friend in the world of private trackers. The idea is really simple. The seedbox downloads a file for you. If it's done, you can retrieve the file from the seedbox. Moreover, the seedbox would seed the torrent 24/7 for you. The advantage here is that you don't have to dedicate your home connection, computer and time to torrenting. The problem is that most seedboxes are not free but anyway, it's all worth it.
Can it be used to seed files I've download already, or do I have to download them through the seedbox?
