Thread: low upload speeds and ratios

here's a general question i don't totally understand and am looking for some expert insight on. I am finding that with many of the torrents i upload, I never seem to get a very good ratio. meaning, let's say i create and upload a 1 GB movie file. At bare minimum, I'll get a 1 to 1 ratio, like if only one person snatches the file, I'll only ever upload 1 GB of data. But even when the file is snatched say 5 or even 30 times, i often end up only seeding less than 2 to 1.

I am on a home internet connection with only 800kbps upload, so my data transfer ability isn't super high. But my ISP doesn't block ports or anything so I don't have that problem. I'm guessing that what happens is that someone with a much higher upload capacity snatches my torrent, and then as they seed it, connect to more peers than me and end up transferring 4 or even 5 times the amount of data i am transferring.

I maintain really good ratios at all of the trackers i am a part of, so i am not super worried about my ratios. But every now and then i think, "oh this upload is gonna pad my ratio really well!" and then it never really gets very far.

Aside from having a much faster upload speed on my ISP or buying a seedbox, are there any other tips or tricks on how to improve this?

I'm affraid that there's nothing to be done except, like you've already mention, to buy a seedbox or get a faster connection...

The same thing happens to me when i upload stuff on What or Waffles where almost everybody has a seedbox or at least the one who downloads have a seedbox because they are not affraid for their ratio. What i wanted to say is that when i upload a torrent there a few users may jump on it right away and if only one of them has a seedbox he will take all the upload and i will mostly seed to him. For example i have a 100 KB/s upload speed and he will download from me 80-90KB/s and the other will download the other 10-20KB/s. And like you mentioned at the end i will end up with a ratio 1.0 or maybe 1.1 ...

The only thing that you can check is how many upload slots per torrent you have set in the torrent statistics. But this may help you only if there are a lot of peers who are downloading from you and in case you have the stats set to a low number of upload slots per torrent.

thanks for the info. yeah i was just figuring it was not something i could control much. and like i said, i've got healthy ratios so it's an not a huge worry. was just wondering if i was doing something wrong. so until someone wants to give me a free or really cheap seedbox, I'll just let the other guys take all the trafiic on my torrents! :0

I only have 250 up speed and still maintain good ratios and the key for me is let them seed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you can afford the power and make sure your pc or laptop does not go into sleep mode.

You just need to keep seedong man. My upload is one tenth of my download but if I just be careful with what I download I can maintain my ratios and be safe in the trackers. So just download what you need and if you really need it search on some public trackers for it if your ratio is low.

I think if your connection isnt too fast, the best strategy is to seed for as long as possible. Usually the swarm dies down after a while, especially on large-sized torrents, then if anyone snatches you will get a good share of the upload.
This wont be too effective at places like SCC, What, Waffles, as the users there tend to seed forever as well.
