Thread: rutorrent(rtorrent) seedbox settings?

Hello everyone. I have purchased a seedbox with rutorrent(rtorrent) interface and I feel that my settings are horrible. I tried searching the forum and the internet but had no luck finding a proper guide about configuring rutorrent to have best speeds and leechers.

There is a lot of guides for Utorrent, but I hope there is someone out there who can point me into the right direction or give me a guide himself. I think it will be useful for others too. Below is my seedbox package info.

    Xirvik Semidedicated server
    Package: 3XL - PERFORMANCE
    Speed: 100 Mbit/s
    Slots per server: 3

Thank you for your attention! Hope there is an answer there somewhere.

Ok, Let me explain this a little first so u understand better> rtorrent settings are in the rtorrent config file (.rtorrent.rc) and in order to change any setting permanently in rtorrent, u need to do it there. Unless u have access to this file then changing the settings in rutorrent will only have effect for the current rtorrent session & till rtorrent is restarted. The reason why is once u restart rtorrent, it then reads the config file and reverts back to those original settings. Some settings will not even take effect till after rtorrent is restarted, so changing a few will be pointless.

So u must remember u will need to change the settings every now and then cause they will revert back to the original once rtorrent crashes/restarts or if u have another issue. Im not sure exactly what Xirvik's semi-dedi's settings are or what else is invovled, but thats how rtorrent + rutorrent operates. Anyway, post your server's spec's and your current settings in rutorrent and i will help as much as i can.

Hey, just to let u know, u should edit out your last screen-shot. Its not needed and its a security risk leaving it up.

Anyway, i doubt u can access the rtorrent config file cause your on a semi-dedi and u would need access to the server the seedbox is setup on itself, so your gonna have to keep changing the settings through rutorrent for now.

This is what u can do for settings. Please remember that these settings are not perfect and u may need to change them around a little till u find the best settings that work for u and u are on a shared server so what u do will have effect on others. Also if u restart rtorrent or if rtorrent crashes for any reason u need to change settings again.

    # of upload slots - 20 or 25
    min # of peers - 15 or 20
    max # of peers - 250 or 300
    wished # of peers - -1

U have your speed capped at 12mb/s both ways and u can change these settings, but they will keep reverting back cause u need access to the rtorrent config file. Really theres no need to change them cause 12mb/s is plenty anyway and your on a shared server which could affect other users, but u can just to see if your speed increases.

    global max upload - 0
    global max download - 0
    max # of open files - 256

I wouldnt really mess with the advanced settings cause your on a shared server and some of them need rtorrent to be restarted to take effect, so theres no point in changing them. U can change 1 of them to see if it helps your speed.

    preload_type - madvise

Thats it really and remember this is a ballpark range. U can change any of the settings to what u want till u find whats best for u. Also if u have any questions or help please ask and ill do my best to answer in time.

Thank you very much MikeD !!! Let's see how these settings go and if there will be any questions, I will surely ask you ) About the VNC, I think that next month or the after I will go on a dedicated server and then I will have a better control on my server.

    Thanks once again!

If u go with a dedicated server u will for sure have more control over your server then u do now. On a shared u are very limited on what u can do. Thats 1 of the reasons why i dont like shared servers, especially if there running rtorrent. I feel uTorrent is better to setup on a shared server cause u give the end-user full control over there torrenting and let them make the decisions about there client's settings ans so on.

Just remember to try and get root access cause then u will have full control. I know some companies will give u a dedi server without root so try and get root if u can. U wont believe the difference between having root and not having it. Its like a whole different experience, lol. Anyway, your welcome and post back here if u have more questions or trouble.

Hi there MikeD, hope you will read this. I talked to Xirvik support about changing the settings in the config file (.rtorrent.rc), they agreed but they do not promise all the changes, because im on a shared server. Would you be so kind to compile a config for my seedbox?

I have another issue as well with rutorrent. Sometimes when I try to delete a torrent+data from the rutorrent ui, the ui sometimes crashes and all my torrents start to recheck the hash of each torrent. Xirvik informed me that the delete torrent+data plugin sometimes causes crashes and that it hasn't been fixed yet. They advise me to use the option DELETE TORRENT ONLY and then delete that data through the FTP. But sometimes I do not have the time to access the FTP to do that. Do you think that I should tell them to give me an access to torrentflux or staying on rutorrent is better? Would my experience with seedbox improve if I use torrentflux? I always have errors in rutorrent ui log like "
The request to rTorrent has timed out."

Thank you very much for your support in advance. Sorry for my bad English :)

Yes, i can compile a config for your server if thats ok with u. I dont mind doing it and have time all day so whenever u want me to ill be ready.

About rutorrent crashing when deleting torrents in the webui > yes Xirvik is right and sometimes the erase data plugin causes rtorrent to crash, but this only happens if u try and delete many & Big torrents. If u only delete small torrents one at a time this may not happen. Dont try and delete big torrents through the webui or rtorrent will crash. Actually the best way to delete a torrent is to do what they said and delete them through FTP. U wont have any problems doing it that way, but if u dont have time then just make sure u delete all the small torrents first, one at a time and then delete the big torrents last, one at a time. This may work for u, but thats not 100%.

Also i would stay with rutorrent for 1 main reason. Torrentflux is a memory resource hog and being u are on a shared server, switching to Torrent Flux will degrade performance and not upgrade. I would never use TorrentFlux to torrent honestly, but thats just my opinion. In your case i think it will hurt more so i think u should stick to rutorrent.

The error u are getting in rutorrent about the request time out can be fixed by opening up the settings and going to the general tab. Then u will see the request timeout field > change this lower or till u dont get that error anymore. The error is nothing to worry about anyway, but thats how u fix it.

Thank you for explaining everything to me. I actually noticed that if I try to delete a big torrent, the rtorrent crashes, so I tried deleting small torrent's first liek you suggested. Yes, I found information about torrentflux, that it really eats all the memory. I'm sure that Xirvik won't even allow me to have it. But whatever, now that I'm sure that I will stick to rtorrent, I would love to have the config for rtorrent. For instance, I always see Peer exchange option in Bittorrent tab enabled. As I understand, private trackers don't like this option to be enabled. So I manually disable the option whenever I see it enabled. Thanks for informing me about the error fix, now I won't see it anymore(thanks god). I really have a lot of questions I would like to ask you, since your a pro in this field, but I hate doing that through forum's(take's sometime), we might talk on msn or skype later if you will agree.

Thank you in advance for the config! I owe you 1 !!

ps. Where did you get your signature from? Can you share the secret? I want it so bad :)

Yeah sure, we can talk on MSN later. I dont have Skype so we'll have to use MSN if u dont mind. Just pm me when your ready and ill add u on my contacts. Make it in a little bit though cause i need to go shovel snow outside as my Girlfriend is getting pissed im not doing anything on my day off. I hate snow days for this reason, lol.

Anyway, u should really tell Xirvik to disable peer exchange for good in the rtorrent config file cause that can get u disabled at private trackers. Actually, i been reading on a certain tracker that people have been getting banned for not disabling this and they were all using rtorrent. You can do what u do for now and disable it yourself in rutorrent, but it will keep coming back, so it would be better to disable it the config file. Just add this line to the file and it will disable it for good:

    peer_exchange = no

Your welcome and u can ask me as many questions as u want. I dont mind. Talk to u soon.

EDIT > i got the userbars here in some thread, but i forget exactly what thread it was. Next, i went to userbars.com and made them all one userbar. After that i used Tinypic to upload the userbar and then used it here. Ill tell u how to do it when we talk on MSN, but its really easy and i think u may not need me to.
