    Default Seedbox VPS?

    I have full access to a VPS and I'm wondering if I can run a seedbox on it. If i can, i probably won't mind letting a few other people use it free as well (:

    I have access to the VPS:
    - HyperVM
    - root @ WHM
    - root @ cPanel

    Would I be able to run a seedbox application on it, and how?

    Thanks,
    Kevin

    Ok, thank you. I'll have a shot.

    EDIT : I just tried to copy + paste the uTorrent WebUI client into the site, and it failed spectacularly. Could you please tell me how to set it up?

    Do you have root access via SSH to the VPS? There are usually some steps that I don't believe can be done via web based administration interfaces.

    Q

    PS does your host allow you to use your VPS for torrents?

    Yes, I do.

    Also, the host is not an issue (:

    Please check some things before you decide to run seedbox on your VPS:
    1. is Torrent allowed on TOS / AUP ?
    2. how many VPS users split on your hardware server?
    3. what is your harddisk spec ?

    VPS indeed can split CPU and memory usage.. but cant split harddisk usage.
    Therefore hi routines seedbox will really consume disk performance, and will also affect other users.
    Please be careful. I really suggest you dont do seedbox on VPS. Do it on DS or commercial seedbox.

    1. Yep (:
    2. I am the owner of the whole VPS :p, there is only me on it (I'm hosting 2 sites for my friends which don't get many hits, about 100 a day)
    3. Um... I'm not sure, but there is an 80GB storage partition and a 80GB backup partition

    You mean you have dedicated server, installed virtualization OS there, and only created two or three VPS nodes only for you and your friends? Wow, It is absolutely allowed then.

    Wont you mind share to us the hosting provider you're using ? Thx.

    Next step. What Linux distribution are you using and what torrent client do you want to use?

    uTorrent can be run but it will require a graphical session to be started which will use more memory. If you have the resources to run it this can often be the best way to do things. It keeps it familiar to those with a Windows background. Once started you enable the web interface and perform all actions through that.

    To get going under a Ubuntu installation:

    $ sudo apt-get install xfce4 wine tightvncserver
    $ vncserver

    This will prompt you to set a password. Then grab a vnc client and connect using the number that the vncserver command told you. host.mydomain.com:1 . You will then see your desktop. Download a copy of uTorrent from the website onto the server (wget http://download.utorrent.com/1.8.4/utorrent.exe) or whichever version your trackers allow.

    Launch utorrent with the command 'wine utorrent.exe' from a terminal box (there should be a shortcut in the task bar at the bottom of the screen) and things should appear as they would on any Windows system.

    This is a very simplistic view of what has to happen. There might be a little more configuration involved if your system differs or you required something different out of your setup.

    Other options include Transmission, Deluge, rtorrent + webgui.
