    Default What is ratio cheating?

I've stumbled across this term a few times now and have seen some members on the chopping block for it.

Can someone explain in simple terms exactly what ratio cheating is?

I tried a search but didn't come up with much in the way of an explanation.

Sorry for the noob question, but I won't know unless i ask.

Using software to fake the amount of kb's uploaded per downloaded kb.
Like setting 1MB upload = 2.5MB, wich means that for every MB you upload, the program will send it off as 2.5MB.

Its everything that has a goal to cheat the stat (a software for exemple, make µtorrent say that you have upload 10Gb but you havent)

As Reohoie says Ratio Cheating is making any attempt to send a tracker misleading upload/download information as a way of deceitfully improving your ratio. There are a number of ways that people do this but for obvious reasons I won't say what they are. Suffice to say that if you aren't trying to ratio cheat then it's unlikely that you will do so accidentally. The only exceptions to this that I've come across are from people cross-seeding incorrectly, and people who have inadvertently overlapping RSS feeds.

If you do cross-seed then you should familiarise yourself with how to do so safely. There's a handy tutorial for it here: How to Cross-Seed safely. The RSS feeds issue tends to be a problem only with movie rss feeds, particularly with scene autobots. If neither of these is a problem for you then you shouldn't really have to worry.

    Thanks for the replies.
My biggest worry was doing so accidentally. Guess I don't have to worry about it too much as I don't generally screw with many settings.
However, I do cross seed quite a bit so I'll definitely check out that artice Kvothe.

If you use torrent clients downloaded from official sites and properly configured there should be no problem at all. Also don't use beta versions as they might not work like they should that's why many tracker ban them. Also check out the tracker FAQ/Rules for allowed torrent clients (Client Whitelist) what you can use on particular trackers. Also don't forget to turn off DHT, Peer Exchange and Local Peer Discovery when you install your torrent client as this features are useless on private trackers and it's not good to have them on... Also if you seed some torrent on one computer or seedbox don't download the same torrent to some other computer/seedbox this is also called cheating so just don't do it but you can seed some torrent from more than one location but again depends from tracker to tracker so be sure to check the rules, forums, wiki, support irc on trackers to get info before you do something bad :D

Ratio Cheating means sending wrong data to the tracker regarding how much you downloaded or uploaded. This can also happen unintentionally. You should give special attention when you are cross seeding. Never download the same file from two locations and never download a file that you are seeding from another computer. This happens easily when you are autodownloading on one computer and uploading a new torrent on another. The uploaded torrent gets downloaded by the first computer because of bot announce or by rss. Also don't use beta clients or unapproved clients. Also make sure you don't add a second tracker url to an already seeding torrent. Always create a new torrent with different piece size if you want to upload it to another tracker.
