I'm still a bit confused sorry.

    Let's use my first example.

Name: How I Met Your Mother SD
Filter: How I Met Your Mother
    Not: 720p
    Quality: All

Name: How I Met Your Mother HD
Filter: How I Met Your Mother
    Not:
    Quality: 720p

Can you correct that one into something that will download the first release of the SD version and HD version?

I wrote a tutorial on this subject.

Automatic Downloading (RSS Feeds and uTorrent)

However, it is using uTorrent as the client, and Xspeeds as the tracker. I have tried using RSS feeds on other trackers and it just doesn't work well for me, but it works almost perfectly if downloading from XS.

    for the sd versio

filter: How i met your mother*
    Not: *720p*
    Quality: HDTV

    hd
filter: How i met your mother**DIMENSION*
    Not:
    Quality: 720p

(Dimension is the scene group of what releases 720p so it should only pick how i met your mother + dimension to your download.)
and the sd filter would skip all the 720p releases.
Just remember to tick "filter matches original name instead of decoded name"
    and the episode numbers. 7x21-23

I would say if you're setting the quality as 720p, you don't need to specify the release group in the filter. I'd format it like this. Note that "?" in the filter means any character since some trackers use spaces and others use "." between words.

    SD
    Filter: how?i?met?your?mother*
    Not: *720p*
    Quality: HDTV

    HD
    Filter: how?i?met?your?mother*
    Not:
    Quality: 720p

    For both
Filter matches original name instead of decoded name - CHECK
    Smart ep. filter - CHECK
    Minimum interval: Match always

With the smart ep. filter it will only download the first of each episode available so you don't need to worry about setting an interval. However, uTorrent versions 2.2.1 and above will automatically re-download an episode if a PROPER version (i.e. there were issues with the initial release) of the same release comes out afterward.

If you happen to download a bad version of an episode and want to ensure the next version available gets picked up, you can simply hit the RESET button on the bottom left of the RSS filter page and it will pick up the next torrent to match the filter.

They are wildcard. example for *720p* would download any release with 720p in the name.
and for the ? widlcard it is just to replace one "mark" in the name.
Like the GreenSeeder used in the name because it might have space or dot.
