    Default DLNA Help Please

What I'm trying to do is figure out how to set up my Windows 7 to be a DLNA Media Server, but I'm yet to find any information that I can wrap my head around.

    Questions I have:

Can Windows 7 be set up as a DLNA Media Server as is, or do I need separate software?

If so, any suggestions to what I should use?

Any good links that you know of that could help me? I've been unsuccessful so far in my google searching so far.

What I am trying to be able to do is have my DVD Player be able to play movies/tv shows from the computer so I don't need to copy them to the external HDD each time.

If anyone could help point me in the right direction, I'd be really appreciative.

    Wonder

Windows media player can actually act as a DLNA media server, so you wouldn't have to install new software if you take that road, however I would still recommend you install third party software to act as the server, they tend to do the job much better than WMP in my experience. If you do decide to go with a 3rd party one, I would recommend XBMC, however there are very many alternatives so if that doesn't work for you there are tons of other options. :)

Hope you don't mind me asking a followup question...

With XBMC, does it have the ability to share things to a DLNA device from a particular directories automatically without me having to go into the program each time I add new files?

Yeah, windows 7 is a DLNA server. I think its on by default after you open windows media player. But you want have anything on your library until you configure it.

I have heard PS3 Media player is the best. I run miniDLNA on a mips machine, so don't have experience with Windows DLNA servers.

I'm just starting down this road myself. My research has led me to Mezzmo:

Mezzmo - The ultimate media server for streaming movies, music and photos to your UPnP and DLNA devices

This will scan designated directories for new media. Also, it will transcode your files on the fly (if you have enough firepower on your server).

One more thing to worry about with DLNA is that not everything is as "compatible" as it should be. So check to see if your DVD player is on the supported device list.
