You don't need a backup cd or restore/repair disk for a fresh install...what you need is a copy of Windows installation CD...

If you download it then follow the instructions on how to burn and stuff...if you alredy have one then change your boot sequence in bios to start with CD/DVD drive first so when you put the DVD in and start the comp it will say 'press any key to load DVD...' so do that...then pick the HD/partition where you want to install it and it should give you the option to then format it and from there iots straight forward...

What you do need to do before all this tho....is backup any of your important stuff that you need from the laptop....i.e copy the files to external HD or burn to DVD or something and be sure to scan them for viruses after reinstalling

yes yes of course. i would backup all my files first (only really important things i consider are music and bittorrent files. then i copy down all the programs (not many) and fresh install those as well. how could i download the restore cd? is that legal?

Yes after fresh install you have to install all your programs again but make sure you install anti-virus first and scan the other programs before installing..

You can find Windows installation DVDs on torrents but not sure if they always work...havn't found the need to do this personally lol

AS for legality...if you own a windows copy already and you have a genuine key then perfectly within your rights to download a backup having misplaced the DVD....if not then obviously not legal as is the same for all torrents of copyrighted material

i do own a copy and i can get my windows 7 home premium key from my laptop.

but, from those windows installation DVD's, don't they install with a preset key or something? or do you input your own key? i might just do that :P

Not all of them have preset keys...just find a torrent with a windows 7 iso and read the description to see if the installation method and how they explain registering the copy....I'm not quite sure how it is nowadays but i'm pretty sure they'll still have some that are legitimate backups of just the DVD.
