    Default FTP not connecting

After hours of trying to find a solution to my problem I'm posting to see if there is a knowledgable member that can help a noob.

I am sharing a 24G, 2TB kimsufi with a friend, who has set it up running windows. (he's unavailable at the moment otherwise I'd ask him).

I usually log on using remote desktop. For the first time today I tried to connect using filezilla on my home pc to download the files from the server but it will not connect.

I have entered the IP address, and using port 21, my login info that I use for remote desktop (username and password) but filezilla keeps saying connection timed out. I've never had an issue with filezilla before when using it on other seedboxes. Is there something I need to tweak on the server to allow myself to connect.

    any help appreciated

    thanks

Do you get something like that:
    Error: Connection timed out
Error: Failed to retrieve directory listing
That's the error message you get when you use the wrong port or when the port it blocked by the firewall (I'm not really an expert with Windows error messages) The problem stays the same though.
First of all are you sure it's the correct FTP port? Your friend may have changed it, because of security reasons.
    Do you have root access?
What FTP daemon are you using?

This sounds like a Windows box. He/she stated Remote Desktop twice, of course it could be VNC, but I would usually call it that.

Is it a Windows or Linux box?
If it's Windows, we would need to know what FTP server is running on the server. Could be IIS, Serv-U, a number of things really.

EDIT -- If it just stopped working today, safest bet might be to just reboot it.. Whatever is running the FTP server/daemon, possibly crashed or the service is stopped. Give 'er a reboot.. lol.

    Thanks Magister,
    the error is
    "connection timed out"
    "could not connect to server"

I was thinking that perhaps he has changed the port on me without saying, I do have root access, filezilla is the ftp.

I have decided to try a reinstall of the ftp manager and try again. will let you know.

To answer all your questions besides what dameon he is running.

Because you have never been able to connect successfully via FTP at all, I think he changed the default port and maybe also has a firewall enabled.
I guess you already reinstalled the FTP server, but otherwise you could have just checked the settings of Filezilla Server and the firewall. I assume you can log in via Remote Desktop?

You have rebooted it first, correct?

I have not used the FileZilla FTP server -- but I would probably rather try and find the Settings (Ports) and ensure the service is running.. rather than blow it away, to start at least.

And as Magister said, once you are able to locate what port it is running on -- You will need to go into Windows Firewall or whatever firewall solution is installed and ensure there is an incoming port exception in there.

After way too much messing about for something which I thought and hoped would be simple (which probably is, for more tech savvy folk than me) I have reinstalled the FTP manager , I'm using filezilla which I've never had a problem with in the past. I think that the problem was that the port had been changed but can`t say for sure till I hear from my buddy but it seems to be working now and using port 21.

I really appreciate all your help, it never ceases to amaze me how much support there is here and also just how much I don`t know.

I`m locking because the issue is solved, thanks again
