It exist multiple methods to format a harddrive and with some of them you can recover your data, but with others you can't.

DOD 5220.22-M: It's the standard of the US-Departement of Defense for electronic media. The data will be overwritten 7 rounds with pseudo data ( 010101 ...) It usually takes multiple hours or days to completely format an entire HDD with this method, but on the other side there is no way you can recover the data. It usually takes a few hours or days to do that.

Gutmann-Method: That's the absolute maximum that's possible today and the data will be overwritten 35 times, which makes it the safest method, but also the most time consuming.

If you didn't use explicetly use one of the above methods then you just formatted the drive with a so call 'low level' method, which makes it possible to recover the data.
I would recommend you to use File and data recovery software to unformat, undelete files. Recover deleted files and recover formatted disk or corrupt drives - EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard. , because it's know the be the best available data recovery software on the market.

EDIT: Don't install anything on the HDD you like to recover, because that can cause overwritting of the data.

I remember using some programs to recover data when I had accidentally re-partitioned some volumes incorrectly. I was lucky and got all the things I wanted to save, I think I used two programs, one to detect and recover old partition tables and one to read and copy the data from the sectors.
The other one I recall was File Scavenger but I can't be certain what the other one was called. It might have been Active@ partition recovery.
Only a few files were slightly damaged (pictures for instance, some pixels were missing in some of them) and even fewer that were badly corrupted. Just avoid overwriting anything and you should be able to recover what you need.
Anyway here's a short list of tools: List of data recovery software - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

If it was simple format without extra wiping or zeroing sectors I would recover data like this:
    1. don't write anything on that HDD because it will overwrite "deleted" data and you won't be able to recover it 100%
    2. find program "GetDataBack for NTFS" or "GetDataBack for FAT32" (choose according to partition type you had before formatting)

This program is miracle, you can easily find cracked version on net and it will do the recovery very good. If nothing was written after format, you will get 100% data back.

Didn't check this link but it might be good.
Runtime GetDataBack for NTFS&FAT v4.22 | suryadewa.com | free download, movies, software, news, music, tips, tricks, lifestyle, Health, Seo, Mobilephone

Edit: I used this program multiple times and I can tell you that this is all you need. When selecting where to restore deleted files don't make mistake and save recovered files to HDD your are trying to save :)

Don't copy any files to your HDD now. Any you may try "EasyRecovery Pro". Google it and you can find where to download.

    Good luck!
