Default Getting Slow Speeds with Filezilla when DLing from Seedbox

    Hi all,

I recently bought the low end Feralhosting slot and everything within the seedbox is working just fine (except uploading, I get zero movement on that) but when I go to DL the files off my seedbox via Filezilla or WinSCP it only runs at 300kbs, possibly peaking at 600 for a second or two. I know I read in multiple places that I should expect 1mb+ speeds, so what am I doing wrong? I am transferring via SFTP, could this be a hindering it?

I have a Time Warner Cable connection with 10-15mb down and I usually experience 1mbs downloads, even though I suspect I should be getting more. I'm not terribly knowledgeable with seedboxes and SFTP programs, so just let me know what you need to know to get to the root of the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

the speed between your seedbox\server and ftp as nothing to do with the seedbox speed it has everything to do with your home line so whatever speed u pay for to your isp m8 is the speed u should get, hope this clears it up a bit for u

sorry just reread your post you should be getting a lot faster than u r canu not try a different ftp proggie like flash fxp or cute ftp m8 see if u get different results

Whats the cuteftp trial version like? What does it limit? Which version should I go with? I'm on a 64 bit windows 7 system.

Just tried Flash FXP. I like the ease of use with this program but I get near 100kbs still. I guess it's not the programs....

How many transfers do you have going at once? I use filezilla and if I limit my transfer to 2 I tend to get 1MB/s per file. I'm with Time Warner as well but I have the turbo boost plan which usually gets me around 3.5MB/s download. Also I try to avoid peak hours when the download speeds are not so great. Typically do all my ftp stuff over night when I'm in bed.

only 1 going at a time. Nothing else is using up my internet during the transfer and early in the morning it was running at 300kbs and now it runs at 100kbs, probably because of the peak time you mentioned, but still a far cry from what I was told.

I just went ahead and bypassed my router by connecting my modem directly to my laptop. Still the same deal, guess that rules out the router causing problems. I also tried regular FTP, which I don't want to use, but did so for the sake of getting down to the cause of this and it was the same thing.

I have zonealarm installed on my system, but Filezilla is given clearance all the way through.

SFTP has very little overhead, maybe about 10% max depending on cpu usage.

If you are sure your bandwidth is 10 Mbps, and you've tried SFTP and FTP connected straight to the modem, and you've made sure the seedbox is not uploading when you're trying to get files off of it, then I highly suspect the problem is on their end. Easiest way to test: try sftping from a friend's house or school connection.

EDIT: I just thought of something. Are you transferring many small files or a few large files? Many small files will result in dramatically worse transfer speeds.

I find that I often have to increase the number of transfers to about 5 in order to max out my home and work connections with FileZilla.

SFTP has no inherent limitation in speed. It will run as fast as the minimum of your download speed and the remote server's upload speed.

You should also keep in mind the location of your seedbox. If you live in the USA, or even worse in China, you won't be able to max out your home connection with an European seedbox.
I have to disagree with what yorkshire said, because the connection of the seedbox is very important.
Obviously you won't be able to get higher transfer speeds than your seedbox is capable of. With what kind of speeds are you able to download/upload torrents? (keep in mind that the uploadspeed is only accurate if you use high level trackers, Deluge and an autodl tool)
Try stopping your torrents and post the results.

If you need help feel free to PM me, but keep in mind that asking for an invite is not considered help.

tentonwire: I try to transfer large files (4GB+), but only 1 at a time. But I've also tried transferring a 50mb file with nothing else running, same deal.

Magister: I'm not sure if you mean my transfer speeds or feralhostings, so...

On my Laptop, if I add a torrent to utorrent and download it personally, I average 1.1 mbs. Upload is usually 0.X kbs but it sometimes gets up to 100kbs for about 15 min.

Transmission on Feral Hosting has 1-6mbs down with 0 upload. I have yet to see it upload a single byte.
