Default 2nd users rtorrent keeps crashing ?

    ubuntu 10.4 server 32bit
    kimsufi 2g
    rtorrent + rutorrent
I used the auto install everything script lol, and everything works fine other then i have to keep starting rtorrent in screen every time he downloads anything, it has never happened on my side of things so i guess something has gone wrong with the 2nd user setup, and im way to new to find out what. and also when we both have some activity on the server the cpu goes way to high 90-100%. and the disk is at about 50% full ive got like 30 torrents seeding and hes got like 3 big ones.

i was going to just do a clean install of Debian 6 and run the script again, but i figured i should ask here for some help first, maybe one of the experts here wouldn't mind helping me out.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

    thanks..

What kind of script did you use? Maybe it's buggy?
Are you sure you have the right amount of max memory in rtorrent settings? If it's too low it will obviously crash. (maybe it's just not enough memory for your usage and especially the CPU)
Can you post buffer sizes of rtorrent?
How do you share the server? Have you setup two different VPSs or do you just have two different users?

The Kimsufi 2G is the cheapest server you can find and has a 1.20Ghz frequency, which isn't a lot especially if you share it.
Most people don't know what they can expect from a server/VPS/seedbox and having over 30 torrents running certainly kills the disk.
A lot of torrents seeding trash the disk and especially if you want to do that and still expect to have high speeds you need a SSD.

i used the ( no-check-certificate -O autodl-setup Download autodl-irssi from SourceForge.net ), the max memory says 820 on both, in rutorrent. and out of the 30 torrents seeding only a few are active like 5-6 and 2 of the 2nd users, ive seen people clam to be seeding 1000 torrents with no problem at all on the 2g but with only 1 user. i know it should be able to handle 2 users with at least 20-30 total torrents seeding, or am i expecting to much from this server ?

a friend of a friend walked me through the set up and he added the 2nd user manually, and got rid of webmin, and whatever else idk.

and its only the 2nd users side of things mine has been fine, no problems at all.

Well I don't know how hard you push your server and I have also never had the Kimsufi 2G, will get oen next week though.

If that's the script I think it is, it is actually pretty good. Why didn't you just set up the 2nd user with the script?
I don't have any experience with sharing a server like that, but the Kimsufi 2G has 2GB (2000MB) memory why don't you at least use both the half of it.
or for everybody 1500MB max burstable.
The ram is set extremely low and you aren't even using the whole RAM of the server. It may be possible that the other user is just pushing the server harder than you do. Have your torrents a lot of activity or are those just some small music torrents or stuff like that? The torrents with big junk sizes really push the RAM.
You can also be seeding 10000 torrents if you like, but you will have extremely slow speeds with high CPU and memory usage.

    To sum up:
First use a higher max memory setting, if this doesn't work
Reinstall it with the same script with add both users at the beginning
if all fails I'm pretty sure that the other user is just pushing the RAM harder than you do and it causes the crashes, but the ram setting is definitely too low.

i would say we both of us push it the same, i have a lot of little torrents and he has a few big ones, while i will have 5-6 uploading he will have one, and its hitting 100% cpu. and the memory settings are what they were set at when everything was installed i haven't changed any settings. and i can understand having high cpu and low speeds with a lot of torrents but why would it just be his crashing ?
and we have uploaded about the same amount to so our torrents have about the same activity. his torrents are just much larger then mine.

i think i will just install Debian 6 and run the script again and set the 2nd user during install, i guess if that dont fix it, then the server must be crap. i found someone else saying ubuntu 10.4 on ex4 was giving him 100% cpu as well.

Why don't you try using the full memory first?
Did you change the memory settings?
The server has 2GB of memory and you both only use 820MB. Just because the script set it like that doesn't mean it's right.

Big torrents = big chunk sizes = uses more memory
I think that he consumes more memory that you do and that's why the memory settings are too low for him. First change the damn memory settings.

Try changing the setting to this:
other limitations: max memory usage: 2000MB (just try that for each user, or maybe try 1500)
    advanced:
    hash_interval: 30
    preload_type: madvise
    preload_mins_size: 262144
    preload_required_rate: 5120
    receive_bufer_size: 262144
    send_buffer_size: 8192000
Test those settings and tell me if they give better results.

Magister's advice, as usual is excellent.

I just want to add a comment about the max_memory_usage setting in .rtorrent.rc which is widely misunderstood. I can't tell you how many seedboxes, even from good vendors have this misconfigured. The max memory setting does NOT refer to physical memory. This refers to kernel mapped memory and therefore is not limited by the amount of physical memory in the server.

Setting it too low not only has the potential to drive up cpu/disk usage, but if you overflow the map it will also generate errors along the lines of 'rtorrent File chunk write error: Cannot allocate memory', Followed by a dramatic drop in download speed and/or inconvenient crashes. I suggest that you set this much higher. Perhaps start with something like 3500 MB per user. Yes this setting can exceed the amount of physical memory within reason.
