    Default Laptop to TV resolution

Hi, my mom just bought a panasonic GT30 and im trying to connect my laptop to it. Is there a way to get the resolution up to 1080p or the the natural resolution of the TV? right now im on 1280 x 1024 @ 60 refresh rate and the natural resolution of the  tv is 1920 x 1080. is there a way to get to that resolution up to that? cause when i try to put it @ that setting in the laptop graphics options i just dont get a display on the tv. is there a limit or something in the resolution that my laptop can get to or someting? i have an HP pavilion laptop.

The graphics card will limit the resolution you can get, so you need to check out the graphics card specs, to see what resolution it can achieve.

    Hi panamangix,

You may have several problems here. (1) Your video card should have a max output resolution. You can probably find this by making sure you have the most recent drivers for your video card and checking your systems display settings. Alternatively you can find the specs for your card' model online. (2) Even though both your computer and TV might be capable of producing a 1080p signal, you have to have the correct connection. HDMI and DVI carry a digital signal which support transmission of 1080p along with audio. VGA is an analog signal and you might not be able to display full 1080p with it. In any case, you wont be able to transmit audio to the television using VGA alone.

I had a similar problem with trying to stream HD movies from my laptop. I ended up buying a Digital Media Receiver and it's worked well for me :D

    Hope this helped,
    Roam

You know you can manually change the resolution of your laptop to almost anything you want, even past what its limits are. RivaTuner is your best friend.

Which OS are you using? If you've correctly installed your notebook software there may be an external program, something like "Intel Graphics Media Accelerator Driver". You can always right click the desktop and go to Display Settings. Which is the highest resolution available to your laptop and to your monitor after you hook it up? You might have to select "Identify Monitors" to get the laptop to detect your TV.

A lot of these things you can find out with a quick google search. In Vista I believe you can right click the desktop, go to Personalize, then Identify Monitors should be a button in the top right. If you hit that after your TV is connected you should be able to select your TV in the Display Settings and change it's resolution. If not (it's shaded out for some reason) try selecting the TV monitor and either cloning your display or selecting "extend the desktop onto this monitor".
