A seedbox is basically a computer with a very fast connection that you can use to upload or download stuff really quickly. You basically buy these for fixed periods of time.
Seedbox
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A seedbox is a private dedicated server used for the uploading and downloading of digital files.
Seedboxes generally make use of the BitTorrent protocol for uploading and downloading, although they have also been used on the eDonkey2000 network. Seedboxes are usually connected to a high speed network, often with a throughput of 100 Mbit/s or more. Some providers are testing and offering 10Gbit shared servers, while others are developing other systems that will allow users to scale their needs on the fly. Files are downloaded from the torrent site and its users, and from there they can be downloaded at high speeds to a user's personal computer via the HTTP, FTP, SFTP, or rsync protocols. This allows for anonymity and, usually, removes the need to worry about ratio. Seedboxes can run on most major operating systems (Windows, Linux, or Mac OS X). More expensive seedboxes may provide VNCconnection, or remote desktop protocol on some Windows-based seedboxes, allowing many popular clients to be run remotely. Other seedboxes are special purpose and run a variety of torrent specific software including web interfaces of popular clients like Transmission, rTorrent, and μTorrent, as well as the TorrentFlux web interface clients. Mobile interface support is also offered by clients such asTransmission.
Seedboxes on high speed networks are typically able to download large files within minutes, provided that the swarm can actually handle such a high upload bandwidth. Seedboxes generally have download and upload speeds of 100 megabits per second. This means that a 1 GB file can finish downloading in under 2 minutes. That same 1 gigabyte file can be uploaded to other users in the same amount of time, creating a 1:1 upload:download ratio for that individual file. Seedboxes' ability to transfer files so quickly makes them very attractive to the P2P and BitTorrent communities.
Because of the mentioned high speeds, seedboxes tend to be popular inside private torrent trackers, where maintaining an upload/download ratio above 1 can be very important.
Seedboxes are also used to circumvent speed throttling by ISPs or evade national laws such as the HADOPI law in France.

There you go
It is a real computer but you don't have access to it's hardware. You just use it for downloading and uploading stuff and when the time period for which you have bought it expires, you lose access to it.
Hello there, welcome to T-I!
In essence, a seedbox is a private server used for the uploading/downloading of digital files.
You will know these files as ".torrent" files.
Seedboxes are often used to build up a good buffer, or increase a persons ratio on a tracker. They are generally much faster than a home connection would be, having line speeds of 100mbps to 2gbps.
Seedboxes almost always come with something called a WebUI. Imagine this as a web-based version of your local torrent client.
The process of using a seedbox goes something like this:
- Download the .torrent file you wish from a tracker
- Upload said .torrent file to your seedbox via the WebUI
- Sit back and relax as the seedbox downloads and uploads everything for you!
- *OPTIONAL* Use FTP (File Transfer Protocol) to download the content from the seedbox to your home computer
Seedboxes are very easy to use and get hold of. There are plenty of providers all over the net (and plenty here at T-I), who sell them for very cheap prices.
What are the benefits of a seedbox?
There are plenty benefits to a seedbox, for example:
- Very Secure
- All the downloading and uploading is done remotely, nothing touches your computer.
- Very Fast
- Seedboxes are very high speed servers. Great for building buffer and increasing ratios.
What else could I do with a seedbox?
You can also get seedboxes that are actually VPS'. VPS stands for Virtual Private Server. A VPS is practically your very own computer located in a highspeed data centre with quality hardware. They mostly run on Linux, so if you are thinking of purchasing one, some command line knowledge is necessary. With a VPS seedbox, not only can you run a torrent client but you can also run 100's of other services and applications.
For example:
- An Image Host (Think the T-I Image Dump located at the top navigation bar)
- A VPN - Virtual Private Network (A secure tunnel that encrypts all your online traffic)
- A remote DropBox server
- An FTP server
The list is endless.
VPS-based seedboxes do cost a bit more than a seedbox that only contains a torrent client and an FTP server but if you are interested in a bit more freedom and/or have some knowledge of the Linux command line, then a VPS is for you.
You can find out a ton more in our SeedBox Discussion section - I have barely scratched the surface of what a seedbox is, and what is possible with them. You can also find many providers who issue T-I exclusive deals in our Seedbox Advertising section.
To access these areas, you need to create an introduction. You can do this here.
I hope that helped, good luck!
