There are several things that you can do to increase your account security.. This is general advice for all trackers. I am not a TT member, so if TT has any unusual quirks, I'm going to rely upon someone else jumping into this thread to point those out.
Choose a complex password. Ideally it should have upper and lower case letters, a number and a symbol. If you use easy to guess passwords, someone may guess them. Or figure them out with a brute force password generator. All of my passwords look something like this.. (&%#?<|{}+~9Wx@>d
As you might guess, I have a password manager that manages those ummm difficult to memorize passwords. A lot of people have their browser remember the password, then just have one master password. You should also have a different password for each tracker, so that if one is compromised, the others remain secure. Do not use birthdays, SSNs or the names of your two favourite nieces. Those are not strong passwords. Also try not to use well known or easy to guess password recovery hints. Perhaps consider changing your password periodically, rather than using the same password year in and year out.
Use an encrypted SSL connection if it is available. That means using https:// addresses instead of http://. if your tracker supports them. And have a good, up to date antivirus program on your computer. As well as running regular spyware scans (e.g. with the excellent Malwarebytes software).
And finally.. try not to leave an email with your tracker password sit in your online mail account. Accounts such as Hotmail get hacked or "social engineered" with some frequency. At least have a strong password for your email. And use https:// for your email as well (if it is available). If you do these things, you will eliminate 98% of the scenarios where someone might be able to steal your password. It would also be good to collect irc contact information in advance. So if you ever run into a problem, you have an easy way to communicate with tracker staff.

Has happened to me as well on TT once but luckily I was able to convince one of the mods that I was a genuine member. You probably need to show some proof that you were a member and try and remember some stats around the date it was hacked. In my case I had some upload of 300 gb odd and when the mod checked the account it was something like 4 tb...so he understood, disabled that account and set up a new account for me...but this is not a rule. They take it case by case...
its a different story that my account unfortunately got disabled later due to lack of activity when I went on a long vacation and forgot to park the account...I think they have that feature...
News from TT Staff just posted
It has come to our attention that there was a recent security breach on TranceTraffic.
Email addresses (just the addresses, not the accounts themselves) might have been taken and a number of accounts were temporarily hijacked, but passwords were NOT compromised.

Thanks for adding that information RedAngelX. There isn't much that a member can do if there is a security breach at the tracker itself.
But you can see how having irc contact info for the tracker would make it easier to regain your account.
And how having a strong email password and password recovery hints would likely stop the actual account hijack after they got your email address.
Account hijacking is becoming more common as people hack various weaknesses in the system. And we don't want to let it happen to our cherished tracker accounts, right?
