    Default Installing VNC on seedbox?

I've just purchased a box from evoboxes, thinking it was a pre set-up seedbox with vnc.... I was clearly wrong and should have read more into it! Through SSH I followed the instructions and got Deluge installed. I had a bash at getting VNC installed and it kinda works. I can see a very blank desktop with a terminal window, not the usual ubuntu desktop i expected. Now, is that because I've messed up installing the VNC (if so, does anyone have better instructions?) or have I just bought completely the wrong product for a novice?!

    Follow this tutorial:

    Debian/Ubuntu Dedicated Server Setup

    It's very good.

Great! Got it working! But in the VNC, I appear to be logged on as root? I do I logon as a user?

In the guide that i linked you, follow the steps 4-6. They show you how to connect to VNC as user. If you already have a user added in your box, you can skip the 4th step and go directly to 5 and 6.

Thanks! All sorted and going! Next task is.... how do I set up a new FTP user and restrict them to a certain directory? Ideally I'd like something visual rather than command line if at all possible

I've had a play around with adding a new user FTP. I managed to add a new user using useradd. Now, when I'm logged in as me, although I can see the new users directory, I can't write to or copy anything to their home folder while in VNC. Whats the best way of being able to do this?

Change the permission of the user's home folder to 777.

Superb - thanks! Even found a nice frontend for ProFTPD

This is probably a long shot but it there anyway to create a direct http link to a file for an end user?

Yes move that file into /var/www and it can be accessed by the web. (http://SERVERIP/File)

You may also need to specify ownership.

    chown www-data:www-data /var/www/path/to/file

Since you're using Evoboxes have a look at their wiki, there are a lot of articles that you may find helpful: All pages - EvoBoxes Wiki
