what kind of solution do you want? retrieving the data from the hard drive or getting it to work again? if you hear a clicking sound usually you're SOL. If you're trying to retrieve some data off of it then you can always try the good ol' freezer trick. Get a zip lock bag (don't be cheap with it!) and place the hard drive in it to prevent condensation. To be on the safe side, I usually place the hard drive bag in ANOTHER bag. Place the bag into the freezer and leave it in there for twelve hours. You want it nice and cold. Take it out and place it into an enclosure and start retrieving the data starting with the most important first. You may need to do this a couple of times to get all the data you want off of it.

In theory, I believe when you chill the drive, it shrinks and tightens up the mechanical parts that may have loosened, improves electrical issues (think cracked solder joints), as well as the old adage that electronics generally run better when cold. It eventually fails again because the heat buildup, of course. If you hear a head crash, the data in that ring is already gone. Probably nothing you can do to recover the scrapped magnetic parts with a home setup.

As the person above me mentioned, freezing does help your chances of being able to recover the information but only for a period of time, old hack, you should try it.
