    Default Security

Okay first off, hi all. First post in T-I. Now to business.

With New Zealand have a law in place that's meant to crack down on downloaders of copy-righted material, I am looking for ways to download my torrents safely without anybody catching me. I have talked this over many times in IRC with people but I just want to see the views and the explanations of those views. So what I want are the ways of downloading torrents and possible direct downloads from Youtube without being caught by my ISP or anybody else.

I personally am going the seedbox and SSH tunnel way. But, can you even connect an SSH tunnel to a seedbox? And would it even help or is it useless?

Then there's the BTGuard way. A proxy specifically for downloading torrents. Based in Canada, $7 a month (Not sure on exchange rate) gets you good proxy for downloading torrents, 'apparently'.

So, can you give me all your ideas, thoughts, details and explanations.

    Thank you all!

Well if you get a seedbox just make sure you download files from it using a secure protocol e.g ftpes, sftp and you will be fine.

So nobody will be able to see what I'm downloading from my seedbox? Okay, I'll have to look into the secure protocols.

But how would I download videos from Youtube without getting caught? Apparently the ISP's have to monitor sites that get the url and you download from the site, not Youtube.

Programs like BTGuard are crap, what they do is blocking IPs, it is extremely easy to anyone to change his, specially an anti-piracy agency. This 7 bucks would be better spent in making your seedbox better.

Without second thought, i'd recommend you a VPN. It's strong, secure and masks your whole traffic. If you are about to buy a seedbox, go for a VPS. This way you will be able to have both a seedbox and a VPN. As for the installation, it's pretty easy to install seedbox+VPN combo in any VPS.

When you are using VPN, your provider will be able to see only an encrypted data stream. Nothing more, nothing less. You will be able to browse sites, download from youtube, download torrents directly to your PC etc etc. Or you can buy a VPN service from the hundreds of providers out there. The difference though is that if you have a VPS, the logs will be stored in your server and you will be able to delete them whenever you want. Not that the VPN providers will ever give your details to third party but i'm just saying.

The advantage of a seedbox is that, while he will still be transferring 700-2gb or so files depending on what he is downloading, his ISP won't see him seeding 600+GB a week like some of us do. I think that would tip them off as to what he was doing. Some seedbox companies offer VPN with your seedbox like Feralhosting. And why would anyone give a crap what you download from youtube? Use a proxy to do that if they really care that much.

I have good feedback for you on Feral Hosting. Their speeds are blazing fast and they're built up just for torrenting. In your case I think there's no need to embark yourself in the "daunting task" of configure a personal VPS and the various services you'll be needing. Besides the cost of maintain a VPS is very high compared to the prices Feral Hosting can offer you. They have 24h IRC support and they're cheap considering the other companies. Then you can learn how to work with openVPN to encrypt the traffic going back to you from your seedbox.
Have a look at these links before making any definitive move:
    Feral Hosting
    OpenVPN

It is by far the most convenient choice for you in both price and results.
If you can't find ebooks on openVPN and you’re interested, drop me a PM. I'll help you out.

Yeah I pay $16 a month for my Feral Hosting seedbox and Joshua has been very helpful. Most of it you can figure out on your own though by reading the FAQ on SSH tunnels and openvpn.

Basically three words - Seedbox, HTTPS, SFTP. Moving to resolved.
