I would recommend uTorrent and I'm sure most people here would as well. I'm assuming you have windows, because it's a different story for Macs and Linux. I personally prefer 2.2.1 because I don't like the changes that they made in 3.0, but either is fine (as long as your trackers are okay with it). I found this tutorial on T-I, which I think is very helpful settings-wise: uTorrent Tweeking (it's based on an older version of uTorrent, but most of it still applies). The port number doesn't really matter as long as it is between 49152 and 65535 and is forwarded properly.

This ^^
All Winblows users will tell you get uTorrent. Nothing against uTorrent, just windows. Stick with older (approved at your tracker) versions. You can find repositories for older versions everywhere on the net.
Why, just my opinion and from what I've heard/read from others. I also think uTorrent is slowly going to shit.
uTorrent 2.2.1 (build 25130) Download uTorrent 2.2.1 Build 25130 - FileHippo.com <- this build is the lastest and stable before the 3.0 that i also don't like.
a few settings you might need to check
port use any port higher than 60000
use this settings to maximize your bandwidth
use this settings to connect right to peers and to sent the right information to trackers
also you need to have your port forwarded properly as it has been mention in the prevision posts to get the full speed and to get properly connected to the peers.

Sam8cb's advice is very good. But I would suggest that you try enabling encryption and see if it gives you greater speeds or not. If your ISP throttles bittorrent connections and that is a lot of ISP's these days, then forced encryption will often increase your speed 200 - 500%. And it also enhances the privacy of your connection, making it harder to ascertain what is being transmitted. I am referring to the two settings circled in the above picture.
On the downside, it's possible that there may be a few clients in a swarm that are not configured to use encryption. I've never found this to cause me any problems, but it is something to keep in mind. In any event, I encourage you try both options and see what works best for you.

u should youtube utorrent speed up, there a lot of video out there that teachs you how to boost utorrent speed.
...or browse our tutorial section ( bittorent sub-forums ) : BitTorrent
Which country are you from? Seedboxes are so cheap nowadays. I spent hours fiddling with uTorrent to try and squeeze more speed out of it. £10 a month in the UK gets you a box that barely needs any setting up and gives your ratios a rocket up the jacksey
If that's out of the question for whatever reason, then, as has been mentioned already, uTorrent is the best one out there.
heres something you might want to check out if your isp is throttling your speed also....
